Post Leave Formula 1 the way it is...

Apparently Fomula 1 is going hybrid in the next few years.

It’s not quite the same type of hybrid drive-train you’d see in street vehicles, but in an exciting announcement, Max Mosely of F1 has announced that all cars will become hybrid by 2013, along with other changes to the vehicles.

---------------------------------------------------------------
KERS is particularly exciting for us regular car drivers because the creators have claimed that it is twice as efficient as a standard hybrid system. If this system can be applied to production vehicles, it will be possible to realize huge improvements in fuel economy and pretty respectable reductions in GHG emissions.
It seems to me that F1 is the wrong subject to test new hybrid technologies and that F1 cars should remain the way they are even if the whole ******* world goes hybrid.

Here's the article:

Why? Less time between pits = better. Most car tech comes directly from racing applications, why would this be any different?

If hybrid technology becomes successful in F1, this will open up doors for high performance hybrid vehicles for consumers. If this goes through and it works, hybrid cars won't be associated with hippie mobiles.

I hate technology. Lets ban all racing engines and only allow people to use Chevy 350's with carbs.

Hey. at least they get slick tires back next year.....one step at a time.

I dig the hybrid idea.....not as if this planet couldn't use a little less dependency on fossil fuels.

Now, If we could get rid of Alonso........

I see no problem with it. It should prove to be intersting if it works.

Wow, I own two small block Chevys, built for racing. Means I'd be waaaaay ahead of the curve if that happened.

I'm just poking fun at the fact that it's been the same basic engine design for 50 years. I joke with my friend with his old 350 powered suburban that when adam and eve were in the garden they carved the first 350 out of solid oak.

Bring it on. Switch to Bio-fuels or E-85 while they're at it!?!

True but I doubt that's the reason behind this.
Look at the world today everybody is trying to look green with their hybrid tahoes etc. Same thing is happening in F1, burocrats are trying to look like they embrace new technologies (which are currently unexplored for high performance applications)
Also pwrofTurbo hybrid means added weight so we should take a lot into consideration. And who cares if there would be less time between the pits who cares of that advantage if everybody will have that advantage, it's not like it's going to help a particular team.

I am sure that they will be able to manage the additional 55lbs.

KERS doesn’t store as much energy as a traditional hybrid system, but it only weighs 55 pounds and the limited energy storage capacity is well suited for Formula-style racing.

Right.. but it's not going to hurt. Each team is going to have the same challenge, so it's going to be just as competitive. If new technologies are realized because of this practical application and research then so much the better.
