Yes, good used cars ARE out there.

Here is a $6000 car with a $5000 suspension as an example. Plus the cage, race seats, lights, spares, wheels and most likely a nav computer.

I'm sorry, it is simply not possible to build a car for what you can buy one for.

All this talk actually has me considering buying a rally car. Then again I know just how deep the bottomless pit is. I think I'll stick to HPDEs.

No matter how you add it up, it costs close to $10k to build a rally race'able car. It doesn't matter if you do most of the building yourself or if you pay somebody like me to build it for you. A few seasons back we built a Production Class Focus. The car was free to the owner and he still spent close to $12K before it ever saw the trails.
Rally is so much fun, but don't kid yourself - IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE.
Don't forget that there are only two types of rally drivers - Those that have hit the trees and those that will!

[1] Car price comes to $2,800 tax tags and title. Car already has new tires on it.

New tires means nothing for gravel rally. You'll either shred street tires or need to get rally tires. Either way, you'll be spending 400-600 for a set of appropriate tires

[2] Cage price at uper end is $800.

That must be for just the steel. A quality cage, installed by experienced technicians will more than likely cost over $1,500.00 these days

[3] Fire extenquisers, suites, nomex gloves, boots, etc, will have to check all that.

Suits: $250+ ea
Fire Extinguishers: $100 ea for proper motorsports ones
gloves and boots aren't completely necessay

[4] Lights 8 count max, I believe the rules said factory head lamps count as 2 of them, so would have to buy 6. can build the light bar.

Run day only events, don't need lights for those.

[5] Seatbelts 2 each.

$140.00 ea

[6] helments 2 each.

150-1,000.00 ea

[7] triangles 3 each.

cheap

[8] First aid kit with said components. Already have this.

[9] Window nets 2 each in case I want to roll down the window over an inch.

50-100 ea

[10] Extra gages and pod, I assume its allowed, it didn't say it wasn't.

spend whatever you want

[11] 4 extra tires and rims, can get at the junk yard for cheap.

street tires≠good for rally use

[12] maybe relocate the battery to the trunk, shouldn't cost much.

[13] for now off the top of my head this is what would be reguired.

My real world rally math puts you at close to $6,500.00 buying the bare minimum.

This excludes a rally computer, an intercom system, and any suspension.

There are a variety of shops in the country that will deliver you a brand new Group 2 car with more proper rally bits (suspension for one) for under $9,000.00.

As used car leaving you just needing suits and helmets should be able to be had for the aforementioned price or less.

This is also assuming you never run a rally america event, otherwise, add in a couple hundred per event or $1,400.00 for a head and neck brace for you both.

Yea UI saw this car, in fact I looked at all of them, too bad they wouldn't let me run it. I can only run production or G2, that suspension alone will break those rules as I read them. I'm not saying you can't buy a car cheaper than you can build one. I am saying the cars are all out of my class options. That neon looks like it would be great, maybe I could buy it and unmodify it then run it. But then I'll have more money it it before I can even run it. You did give me an idea though on that note.

Not in rally tennessee where I was gonna run it, its 100 percent paved rally.

No its just cheaper down here than up north. ASnd the guy builds race cars, its not cheap steel trust me.

I quess I'll just forget it, seems this is only for rich people. I'll just continue to not pay to race, then I get paid.

Not trying to discourage you, just sharing the reality.

There are lots of other ways to race, they might not have the glamour and appeal of rally, but racing is racing.

SCCA club racing (NASA equivilant), or even running the local circle track can be far less expensive and just as enjoyable.

Rally is about pushing on, from the second you decide to do it, till the day you park the car, you over come obstacles, find a way to to push on, or take some time to regroup and then attack again. It never gets easy, the challenges just become different.

The ad states its a production class car so you should be good to go. If you buy used, get one that's already been logbooked, that way you'll know its legal for competition as it sits the day you buy it.

Suspension upgrades are allowed in all classes....rally cars wouldn't survive on the stock suspension...I tried that on the Evo last race and while smooth, the stuff just wasn't up to the task and I bottomed out multiple times.

Rally is like any other motorsport, some guys with talent and no money getting beat by moderate talent and big budgets. Life isn't fair...yadda yadda yadda. As others have mentioned, you can get into rally and and have fun just participating. That's how my wife and I got hooked in my $2200 Mazda GTX. After a while "just competing" you'll want to be competitive, you find yourself asking the question: will that new motor help me catch the fast guys...what about if I add suspension...and the list goes on and on.

We're just trying to help and show you how this 'disease' will grab hold of you and empty your bank accounts.

Yea I know both you guys are trying to help, and you did btw. I quess I'll just save up for 1. I went to court today and the detective talked to the guy who broke into my house. After he gets out of jail he has agreed to pay me 11k in restitution. If he does I will replace my guns and I might buy a car with the rest. If he doesn't pay on scedual he goes to the big house. So we will see.
