Lap timer?

I'm looking for a lap timer, doesn't have to have tons of features, I just want a nice large (large is key) easy to read screen and the ability to start and stop the timer either via locatable buttons or GPS. The only readout I particularly need is lap time and the ability to split would be nice as long as it's easy to get back to the continuing time. GPS speed would be a nice touch on a GPS timer.

Prefer something relatively inexpensive.

What's out there?

What I need it for: Open road racing. There are no laps, but timing is critical as it's a high-speed rally-timed type event. I use a navigator who uses standard hand stopwatches, but I'd like to be able to monitor the time myself as a backup or in case I have to drive solo.

The RaceLogic Performance Box would work for you, but it might be a little mroe than what you're looking for ... it's GPS based and can do splits. http://www.performancebox.co.uk/

EvoX NAV has a lap timer built into it.

I've not had chance to use it except to time getting to and from work.

Yeah, I looked at the Performance Box aka Driftbox aka VBOX. The screen seems really small though.

I need something that's really easy to see with a quick glance, I can't be staring at a tiny screen for a few seconds trying to make sense of the data.

Don't have an EvoX

AIM Mychron light. less than $300. Nice big in-car display. Lap splitting possible but I think you need a second beacon for that.

Beacon doesn't work for me unfortunately, I need a button to push.

the HKS Type-1 TT has a lap timer, but I'm not sure if that would work for you. the button is pretty small, but you could maybe rig up something custom. There isn't much to the electronics.

These are open highways so I can't really place triggers, that's the problem.

That's why I was looking at GPS options, just was wondering if there were people out there who knew of things I can't find over Google.

All the sales info for stuff like the MyChron all mention that motorcycle racing timers normally use buttons on the handle bar instead of beacons but I can't find any of those systems because it sounds like something like that would work for what I want to do.

Maybe I can buy a magnetic triggered timer and just wave a magnet over it when I want to start/stop/lap
