Hi Rich
Your the person with the roll bar from DTM that I mentioned earlier.
I needed a wider seat, accorrding to Robert Fuller I add downforce to the car LOL. I got red Sabelt Taurus XLs which are HANS approved,

when I roll bar mount the harness I will ensure that the straps are at 20 degrees from center. I didnt think about the mount height and compensating for the HANS thickness.
I will give HANS a call on Monday as I would like to know what is recommended before I order belts.
I like your trailer could you PM me where you got it and the cost?

Yesterday, I was at a shop that supplies a lot of the racers in the DC metro area. They sell seats, harnesses, Hans devices, and other head and neck restraints. I saw the harnesses that go down to 2" up top and he showed me the Hans device and how the narrower belts would fit inside the Hans slot better thus there were a lot of folks online recommending them. HOWEVER, he said that they do not recommend running the narrower belts and that Hans themselves do not recommend running the narrower belts -- full 3" only. Their view (the shop) is that the 3" will go over the "lip" that the narrower belts stay inside of, and thus prevent the belt from potentially slipping around like a narrower belt -- i.e., that the Hans actually appears designed for a full 3" wide belt in that the lip will dig into the belt and hold it.
I had never heard of this issue either way before, but I would like to come to a personal decision as I plan to get a Hans and will need to get another harness anyway and need to decide whether to get the one that narrows up top or not. It bothers me that there is a controversy on this. Maybe I will call Hans and talk to them over the phone before making a final decision. I'm also getting a seat and after trying different seats I found that there is a wide range of harness hole locations on the seats, both in terms of how high/low they are relative to the bottom of the seat and how close together the holes are. On some of the wider seats in particular (which luckily I don't need) the holes are wide enough that they could interfere with the proper fit of a Hans device. For me personally, it appeared that the Racetech seats were better suited for a Hans than the Sparcos. Also, you need to keep in mind your harness angle to the harness bar and the fact that the Hans will make you a little taller at the shoulder, so it can affect your seat mounting position and/or where you have your harness bar located on your roll bar.

Ok I called HANS this morning and here is what they said.
"any SFI belt meets their standard and can be used with HANS device"
I asked which would they recommend, and
"we test with 3" belts and we prefer the 3'' belt"
