AS gurus question about struts options...
...for my IX SE. I just an alignment using Robispec specs, and A6's. Doing very well locally but I would like to go to Nationals this year and be more competitive, so would like to know my options, I cannot jump to STU this year..
Thanks

The Evo is too softly sprung and the shocks aren't right for autocross. You might be able to make a run at it with a set of these:

but (despite the $0 shown) they run somewhere around $3k. You may as well just go to STU at that point.

You'll want the Ohlins fixed perch struts close to $1800 + in price. As others have mentioned, the EVO is going to have a tough time in A-Stock.

IMO, a good suspension guy is worth as much if not more than a good set of CO's.
If you're gonna spend the money on 'em, you might as well spend the money getting them and your car optimized.

I'm curious why you guys think the Evo is no go for AS? The STi has proven extremly competitive. And I really doubt the Evo would be any worse. And honestly may be better! As for the original posters question. Get a set of DA konis inserts for the stock struts. 275 hoosiers, the lightest rims you can afford and a straight pipe after the cat....a nice free flowing filter might help too.
Or you can just let me drive it.

For me it's the nut behind the wheel, but perhaps these pics from Toledo will help fill in the blanks...

I've got DA's (currently rear only - front blown), an upgraded bar, Hankooks, plus K&N filter and no muffler.
Generally the problem is that the stock EVO (8/9) has more body roll than an overweight belly dancer. It's not that the inside rear is always off the ground, it's that it takes too long for the body to transition back and forth. The bar and shocks help, but it just isn't enough. I'm currently running without my front underlip spoiler, as both ends are worn down from dragging on the ground.
With the larger motor and shorter gearing, the STI has a bit more grunt, especially off the line and in tight corners. The EVO 5500 rpm launch limiter, clutch restrictor pill, and hi boost/low compression motor makes the EVO tricky to launch consistently (for me). At Toledo on the sticky concrete, I couldn't keep the tires spinning and was turning 60' times that were 3-5 tenths behind the STIs.
Also, the STI torque shift to the rear helps it rotate coming out of corners.
Finally, the EVO needs an alignment that isn't exactly street friendly to help it manage sweepers.
The EVO is a ton of fun to drive - I enjoy mine every day of the year in all conditions including winter TSD rallys, but IMHO it can't hang with the STI's or the other newer big guns in AS (except maybe in the rain).

Other options that i know of are revalved Bilsteins or custom JRZ ($texas).
As others have said, STU is more EVO "friendly."

I think conevadr hit the nail on the head. The EVO 8/9 is just too softly sprung to keep up with the amount of grip. The EVO X on the other hand is very interesting. It doesn't seem to have as much body roll as the older models and I haven't seen it lift the inside rear wheel on our local events.
