Painters tape necessary?

Hey guys. Just about to go on my first track day (i.e. hyperdrive in Summit). I'm just wondering if applying painter's tape to my CF lip and rims are necessary to prevent chips and scratches. Can't really imagine a lot of dirt and rocks being tossed up in a novice event..or does it?

To your rims? They won't stay on

I wouldn't bother taping up...

Some people go crazy with tape. I see a lot of people tape over the headlights and some do the side mirrors. Personally, I've never put any on at all.

It happens more in the upper groups not only with little rocks flying up but 'marbles' or chunks of tire tread coming off of r-comps and slicks. The black marks from marbles rub off with some elbow grease.

I chip or crack my windshield, bumper, etc at least every or every other track day from hugging those 345 tire vette's and vipers, painters tape never helped me

My funny story is instructing for the Ferrari club years ago and they covered their waxed cars in matching color racer tape. So there I was in a 355 Spider Ferrari pulling several feet of tape inside the open top Ferrari through Lime Rocks down hill corner and front straight!

I thought the tape on the headlights was to prevent glass from flying all over in the event of a direct hit.

I don't tape anything... but I probably should.... The lower side of my door get hammered with stuff from my own R comps. That being said my roof has marks from following other cars that tend to fling everything up in the air. In a group of cars its raining debris.

isn't hyperdrive a lead follow exercise, kinda like doing parade laps? I don't think you'll need painters tape or anything for that.

As most stated...

It will help with preventing the tiny chips on the front bumper / hood...etc...
however if a decent size pebble hits it, tape won't help.

We use racer's tape more for holding up broken pieces of aero or prevent glass to shatter everywhere when you....
