There is a PDF link for the track rental schedule that lists BMW club, Trackmasters, TracQuest, and various regions of the PCA. Right below that is a Driving Schools link that has all the contact numbers for signing up.

Part of the reason there were so few trains is that we were allowing passing in any straights and actively practicing late passing techniques earlier in the day. They even were allowing passing in the turns on day 2 for the instructor group if it was done safely. :P

I would say your wife is pretty cool to allow 10 track weekends!
thanks for the info... will have to sign up for an event for sure...

Looks like 1:51 was his best lap in the GT3 Cup car, that's flyin, and to hold that pace for 6 hrs even with multiple drivers I can't imagine. Of course the Daytona Prototypes were hitting 1:41's and top speeds of 180mph on the back straight.

That lap time of 1:51 in a GT3 is beyond description! I ran in NASA Super Touring 2 at Watkins Glen last fall. It was not to warm, but still the fastest of the 3 Super Unlimited Porsche GT3 Cup Cars that run with us was a 156.6! Goes to show how high the driving level is of the Professional driver/teams. I ran a high 2:07 in my Evo 8 street car with a cage. The car is being rebuilt and it will be a race car when I go back this fall. The Super Touring 2 lap record is a low 2:04 which I will try to better.

3 Days at The Glen in my new EVO IX MR

Well, I just got back from the Glen and all I can say is WOW!!!

I ran Friday with old used up Toyo RA1 tires. The weather was not cooperating because it was hot and humid. I was not getting full boost at the top of the RPM range. Under full throttle below 4500 rpm the boost was reaching 21.9lbs or 1.5 bar, as the rpm's increased the boost decreased? The boost at 7000 rpm's averaged between 7.0 and 8.0lbs or .05 bar? I was loosing around 12 lbs of boost at the high end of the rpm range. The car felt like it did not have any power up top.
As you will see from the video, many cars were able to pull away from me on the straights. These cars would give me the pass and then not lift and pull away from me.
The car has a Buschur Turbo back exhaust, Cam Gears, RRE ecu flash tuned for 91 octane and (1) HKS intake Cam.
The car was only getting 125mph before entering the bus stop. I am not sure why the car had no power in the higher rpm's? ANY HELP would be appreciated!

I changed to the new BFG R1 tries for the second and third day and was impressed with the tires and the level of performance they offered.

Lets compare to the GT3 and the EVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EVO GT3
Back Straight top speed 125 mph 155 mph
Front Straight speed 110 mph 135 mph
Bus Stop speed 80-90 mph 70-80 mph
Turn 5 (right sweeper after bus stop) 1.30 lateral G's 1.24
Turn 6 (left sweeper into the boot) 1.40 lateral G's 1.28
Toe of the boot speed 60-65 mph 50-55 mph

Lap times 2:14 2:12

My conclusion is that the EVO was not running to its fullest potential in reference to the top speed in the straights. If it was I think the EVO would turn a 2:09. The EVO handles much better that the GT3 did and the brakes are superb!

I am getting the car looked at CBRD and hopefully they will be able to fix the declining boost issue with a better tune and help me with getting some more top speed.

Please chime in if you have experienced the same issues I saw at the track this weekend or if you have experience fixing these issues.

I am loading the videos and will be ready for viewing soon!

Thanks,
Adam

Nice writeup! Boost leak test would be my first suggestion.

That was mentioned by another friend who has experience with EVO's as well.

The car reaches and maintains 21lbs from 2500-5000 and then drops off. If there was a boost leak, would the car be able to maintain full boost for the entire period?

The previous owner did tell me that he had the car tuned very conservativley in order to maintain reliability. I am just wondering if he had the car set up to reduce boost in order to lessen the pressure on the motor at high rpms.

I am new to turbos, and reading as much as I can to learn. All suggestions are appreciated and welcome.

Thanks again,
Adam

the stock turbo naturally tappers in the upper RPM range. it just can't feed the motor enough air to pressurize the cylinders, its too small. You should still be able to hold 20psi or so all the way to redline though.

A boost leak test is easy and cheap to do. If you're going to be tracking your car on a regular basis it should be one of the things on your 'to do' checklist before an event.

Nice report from the Glen, sounds like once you get power sorted out you will be flying!

Things to check are:

1) Boost leaks since low to mid RPM's the turbo Wastgate is bleeding off pressure to keep boost as low as 22 psi. Once it starts past 6000 rpm's the stock evo 9 turbo should taper a little to 20 psi or so. The throttle body is notorious for boost leaks and all couplers should have T bolt clamps as well.

Consider at low to mid RPM's your turbo might be actually trying to spin 28+ psi into the system but only 22 psi is reaching the intake manifold. At higher RPM's it might be trying for 20 psi but the leak is now dumping most of the pressure down to 8 psi. However usually a leak that large will trigger the ECU to hit Boost cut since air entering the filter is much higher than what is reaching the engine.

2) If boost is controlled by the ECU then it could be intentionally lowering at the higher RPM's. If the car is properly tuned you should be able to stay at higher boost without any issues.

3) The Wastegate actuator could also be blowing open as pressure builds on the WG flapper, getting a Forge or other WGA with a stronger spring will reduce boost taper in this case.

I'm sure CBRD will get it sorted out!

Video

The previous owner saw the post and called me with some possible issues. He told me the same thing that most of you have already stated. I will be checking the hoses this week and taking it to CBRD next week for the 93 octane tune.

Here is a video of one of the sessions. I was knocking off my friends one by one in my new EVO. You will be able to see how the car has no power top end as they pull away from me on the straights. No problem, the car is awesome in the corners and better braking than I have ever seen.
