Educating the "new" racer.

OK, so, I bought my son a kart. I've tried to get him to race Jr. Dragsters since he was about 7 and he has no interest. He told me he wasn't going to sit around for hours to make an 8 second pass. It would appear he is already smarter than his father haha

Anyway, he got interested in go karts because he's been watching me autocross and road race and wanted to try it.

I bought a kart for him last week and when I picked it up, Gary Reese (our chassis guy) handed me a few papers with it. I was glancing through them and found one that I just had to pass on. Here is what the paper says:

"We need to educate any and all new racers that:

1. Racing isn't easy
2. Racing isn't cheap
3. Racing isn't always safe
4. Racing isn't always fair
5. Hard work pays off
6. Talent and experience count
7. Things break
8. S**t happens
9. It's not all motor
10. Instant gratification doesn't happen

If we don't make these points with newbie's to the sport we can't expect them to stay around any more than the two to three years that seems to be the norm."

The reason is struck me as funny is it pertains to the automotive/EVO world just as much as it does to the young kids starting out in karting.

Read it, listen to it and remember it. Good advise for all of us.

Karting opens soooo many doors for you into professional racing. I did shifter karting for one year and at the end of the season I was invited to a couple series testings weeks and it got me started in pro racing.
Karting teaches everything, espically the shifter karts with a 6speed sequential and front brakes. Hopefully your track isn't a yhc tire track, if so i'm sorry haha.
But please don't be one of the people that just revs their kart wide open on the stand when its cold, no there isn't any carbon build up and no it doesn't seat the rings!

Glad you guys like it. It's easy to understand it and agree with it when things are going well. As soon as the cars start breaking it's very easy to forget.

I am pretty disgusted with the Bad Bish this year as it has not been smooth. The first year yet that the car has failed like it has this year. Hopefully after going over the entire car this time it will once again be fast and reliable. I think we just pushed it too long and took it for granted that it would never break.

One thing about owning the shop, I have nobody to call and cry about how long it lasted or ask who is going to warranty my 500+ whp EVO because it happened to break.......man does that get old. Refer to the list above! haha

I hope my son enjoys racing the kart. I ordered his helmet, gloves, shoes, neck and chest protectors today. Also have his rear bumper and I figured while I was on the phone an XL seat should be ordered in case (cough cough) dad, wants to drive it).

What kart did he get? Only thing a grown man can fit into is a tag, MABY a yamaha can.
