Quote: The real scary thing is that could have easily happened in an HPDE where safety gear is often at street car levels. Nothing about that crash is "Oh, that's because it was racing. That wouldn't happen at an HPDE." Terrifying stuff.
Yep, that's true.

What's freaky is if you watch Marty's vid, at the 9:00 mark you can see that slow red Miata in the previous turn - and see it in the SM vid too. Marty wasn't too far ahead of the SM pack!

That was a fierce wreck. I'm glad everyone is ok. I shed a tear for the Lotus.

Quote: And if you are a novice driver and are running with an organization that doesn't enforce point bys, you may want to consider taking your business and track time elsewhere. Open passing has no place in novice/beginner or even intermediate run groups. That leaves far too many variable open to chance, in the hands of drivers with limited experience.
I agree but think you misinterpreted what I said. It was main straight passing only with point by recommended, but optional. Definitely not open passing.

At the 9:08 mark or so you can see the Lotus spin on my vid. He knew I would have a good run up the back and beat him up the hill so he was trying very hard to get the M3 between us. I cant tell from the video if they touched or not.
