SCCA and NASA

Anyone have experience racing in T2 and in the corresponding NASA class? I am setting my car up for T2 and was wondering about cross-compatibility...

Psst.. I'd suggest posting in the motorsports section (under competition). Better answers are likely, rather then some of the nonsense spewed in other areas.

SCCA T2 restricts to some really weird mods. There really isn't a perfect class in the NASA world that corresponds. The best one would probably be ST1 which is w2w racing with a modified power/weight ratio of 8.7:1.

I'd estimate a T2 Evo around 3500lbs and ~330whp so it's not perfect but it's probably the best fit if you'd wanna run the exact same setup. There's also the PT side of NASA which counts points for each 'mod' you do, but I don't see a T2 Evo fitting into PTA.

I suspect you have an Evo that you want to setup for racing? If so, what year/model Evo do you have? I dont have experience racing an Evo in T2 with SCCA. I do however have experience racing my Evo 9 in Super Touring 2 with NASA. In the past i have glanced over the SCCA T2 rules, but i dont recall much, if any of it. Therefore, i cant tell you for sure what specific NASA class you will be compatible with. I can give you an educated guess. First i just want to make a note that Nate made a mistake in his post. He said ST1 has a w/p of 8.7, which is incorrect. Ill note the correct specs in the proceeding.

With NASA, you can either race in PT, ST, or SU. Here is how it works. Every car has a base class. The base class for the Evo 9 is PTB. If you want to race in PT (Performance Touring), it will involve points and weight/power (w/p). Every modification is assessed a certain point value, so you add up all your mods, and that will determine what PT class you fall into. If you want to be competitive, you obviously pick your mods wisely. If you want to stay in PTB, you have a certain amount of points to play with. You also have a specific w/p limit. The next class above PTB is PTA. In PTA you will have more modification points to play with, and a lower w/p limit. Here are the w/p limits of PTB and PTA:

PTB: 10.25
PTA: 8.70
PT rules and car classification form:
http://nasaforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=31985

If you dont want to be bound by modification points, the next class above PT is ST (Super Touring). ST is a semi-unlimited class. The one major factor that we are bound by in ST is the w/p limit. There are a few modification factors that also come into play, eg tires, weight, and a few other things, but other than that you can pretty much do anything to your car, as long as you dont exceed the w/p limit of your class. In ST there are 2 classes, ST1 and ST2. The only difference between ST1 and ST2 is the w/p limit:

ST2: 8.70
ST1: 5.50
ST rules and car classification form:
http://nasaforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=31815

SU is Super Unlimited, so there is nothing to really say about it. Now as far as what NASA class is compatible with SCCAs T2 class, that will depend on you. Do you want to build solely for T2 and play around with NASA? Or do you want to build your car so that youre pretty competitive with both organizations? So it all comes down to what you want. If T2 is the primary series you want to race in, than id say look at the NASA car classification form and see where your mods place you given how you plan to build for T2. If i had to guess, id say PTA. Since the w/p limit of PTA and ST2 is identical, id say that if you ended up in ST2 because of points, you could make it work, but you would have your work cut out if youre racing in a region against well prepared ST2 cars.

This year was my first year racing my Evo. And my car is by no means a well built ST2 racecar. Its really more of a PTA car that has a few too many points to stay in PTA. Thats been the case because ever since i started competing ive always focused more on improving me, than my car. Beyond that, i have the typical financial challenges that most racers have. My next step for the 2010 season is to better develop my Evo for ST2. If all goes well my car is going to be faster in 2010. You can read about it all on my website. Let me know if you have any other questions. And if you want to contact me email is the best route because i dont login all the time to check PMs. You can reach me here accordingly:

What he said, even ST2 is a radical departure from T2. And to be competitive you'd need an almost entirely different car than what you'd be allowed in T2.

Go with PT.
