Autocross lesson

Did my first autocross in a modded EVO at Beaver Run, fun and not fun. Fun since it can blaze a good set of street tires all over the place, not so fun that the cones come up too fast! Ive done only four autocross's in my time and they have all been in a Lotus Elise, low on power big on grip and easy to toss around. I ended up with a 31.4, FTD was 30.xx. Gave the car to Eric Morse(Instructor at BeavRun who was running the AX) and he turned a 28! I need to get get some seat time in my S2000 and get the EVO a little more sorted, had the boost all the way down to spike 27 and hold 25.

Plans for the car are coilovers, 255/40/17 BFG R1's, BR 2.0 10-1 shortblock and my built head, I think im hooked on AX now.

Good to hear. I would consider Hoosier A6's instead of R1's because the R1's take far too long to come into temp for AX.

Just drive past the beaver run parking lot and put the evo into the paddock

For those who might wonder: beaver run is predominately a track, and the steel cities region uses their parking lot.

I think you will find the 20 minute session (s) that you will get in a pdx or nasa event on that track even more addictive then the ax. Even more so since the evo's are so very very capable out of the box on a road course. Just get some decent linings and watch that speedometer go for the pin .

I'm confused... from what you posted, I gather that the driver needs sorting (no offense) - not the car. Get more seat time auto-xing. Once you get times close to what your instructor had in your car, then you should sort out the car.

30secs...that is very short course!

Both need sorted, me with my negitive attitude towards autocrossing and the car with more tire on it.

Get some 285/30/18 A6 Hoosiers. 18x9.5 or 10 wheels. That'll be the best option

The car was a blast to drive. It had slight "bull in a china shop" syndrome for how much power it was making but with a couple weeks of development, a very good car will be an understatement. I deffinately can't wait to see the finished product!

Practice looking ahead, then worry about the tires.

Agreed...

Learn on streeties & ask some of the experienced, fast guys tips on looking ahead & exactly what that means.

Have fun w/ it & you'll be surprised how much your driving & car control improves by racing around some cones...

As I've been told a thousand times, driver mod first, then play with the car. And of course, look ahead as it's been said and will probably be said again a thousand times more.

I'm guessing you were in SM class?

Been to two more since, these are low key get alot of run events, took a NA Lotus Elise and got 3rd FTD, next took Lotus Evora got 2nd FTD. Next time out im taking my S2000, little more fun than the Lotus, they understeered really bad, but I am getting the hang of it. EVO is under development all apart so it will be weeks before it is ready again.

Nice to see you practicing Curt! haha I knew you wouldn't come to the shootout and just give it a shot! ROFL. I guess I better hit a few before Auguest myself.

Some of these guys need to drive your EVO and see what a lightening switch it is and get a better understanding why it's such a handful to autocross. We'll talk when you come down this week.

Have fun.

nice and congrats!!

did the same within the past year - after being involved in drag racing for years with the hubby, i've turned my attention to autox/hpde events and now we've both fallen in love with another hobby
