Front LSD on an '03

Almost 8yrs of ownership and 6yrs of autocrossing, I'm finally considering putting in a better front LSD I have searched and read and read as much as I could. Most of the information I saw was old or lacked any meat in the review.

So now that the aftermarket for the Evos have matured a lot more, can I get some reviews from you guys who track the Evo? I know not everyone views the gains the same way, nor is everyone's car setup the same, so I'm particularly interested in hearing how you thought BrandX LSD compared to the oem open diff (ie: how did it act differently in corner entry, apex, and exit?). Or if you were fortunate enough to test multiple models, I'd like to hear how you compare them.

John knows his stuff about making an Evo handle. His diff recommendation and install is top notch.

His 12-plate rear diff is the best also. And much more reasonable than most of the aftermarket diffs out there.

I went from an 03 to 06. One the biggest differences in handling between the two models was the front diff. Easiest way to describe it is like if you upgraded to an LSD in a front wheel car. You basically stop spinning the inside wheel on tight corners and the car actually pulls you through the corner. It accelerates out of a corner quicker. It would be a big plus if you are autoxing.

On my FWD VW, I had a Peloquin (http://www.peloquins.com) and could not have been happier but no idea if they make any for EVO's. Quaife (http://www.quaife.co.uk/) seems to have a real good reputation but are pricier.

Longshot, but may also want to check if picking up a whole 06 tranny (and sell your 03) would not be cheaper than LSD + install labor. I have been very happy with the stock 06 LSD.

^you can also get the mitsu unit "reflashed" which I hear significantly changes the driving characteristics of the car

Thats the ACD system (center diff), not the front diff.

The front diff upgrade is definitely a good one and not very difficult to do. The OEM one is quite good and not very expensive. The Quaife is also good, but offers no performance advantage, just greater strength (reliability if launching alot).

The diff allows you to give more throttle sooner on corner exit which will decrease your times corner to corner.

Thanks for the correction. I had a visual of the FWD VW's, where the diff & gears sit together in a tranny case.

I put a quaife LSD in my EVO when they first came out. Hands down the best mod I ever did on the EVO.

Quaiffe

I purchased a Quaiffe for my 2003 and it was pretty neutral before with a slight oversteer, but what i can do in a corner now is just incredible. It pulls evenly and is very predictable. It reacts the same way every time. Plus it comes with a lifetime warranty. Bought mine from Roadrace engineering.

I saw TRE had the installation package, but i guess you could just buy the LSD by itself.
