Turbo lag at autocross

Took my evo to autox for the first time... I find the turbo lag
almost unbearable.... What does everyone else think?? Or does
my car has some kind of leak?..

What do the tech regs say about tuning? lag is always an isue in motorsport, but some times you can get around it with moding (anti-lag, tubuler manerfolds etc).

You can also get around it with left foot braking.

Left foot braking is cool, and very effective, but completely screws the brakes. You could fit a set of mouldered slicks, these should enable you to get on the power earlier and thus let the turbo spool up just as you hit the apex. Also a lot easier.

If you are getting lag, either the course is REALLY tight or you are in too high of a gear. Of the autocrosses I've participated in or attended, only a few have required the Evo to be any higher than 2nd gear and a couple of have been 1st gear all the way. Just make sure you are in the proper gear before the corner. Also you can heel and toe to keep the RPMs (and boost) up.

Autocrossing with turbo-lag is more about timing in the corners. You need to practice getting as smooth as possible, and time the boost repsonse to the apex of the corner. (I.E. get on the throttle earlier, or don't lift )

I try to keep in 1st as long as I can... then once in 2nd.... I'll
pretty much use that until the end of the course.

Btw... I only hit around 1.25 to 1.28 (hkpa on blitz dtt) in 1st
and 2nd gear which is around 18.3 to 18.8 psi...

Is this normal?

I raced my EVO in a lot of autocrosses.. more than 12 .. and I discovered that left foot braking works best for me.. And as said above smoothen your turns for best timing..

I also discovered that agressive driving result in bad timing.. when I take the car easy and I don't push it to the limit and I think I did badly that's when I get really good timing .. So basicly it's not the agressive lunch or agressive turning that will get you better timing the only thing your doing is burning your clutch and tires..

Most important enjoy it while it last..
