The C71 is more like a R6. The C91 is what you would want.

I've run everything from street tires, RA1's, R888, Nt01's, to A6's on hillclimbs just like what your going to run. Even when the surface is a bit chewed up the A6's are the best option. Now you don't get as much of a benefit running them vs the lower level tires but there is still an advantage.

As for real slicks. Yes they will be faster. But, they cost a heck of alot more. In the $550 per tire range vs $350 for an A6.

They even make them just for hillclimbing. I talked with the Michelin guys at the viper cup race at RA and they just happened to run a set of A6's that day on one of the cars for a test. Let's just say that money is no issue, then you run the Michelin.

Smike, cutting tires is one of the oldest and most used tire performance hence technic.
There is even an "art "form and secrets etc how and when etc cut tires. There are guys who actually doesn't do anything in racing teams just prepping tires for the event (cutting etc)

Look it up how important is to have a right tire guy Tire wear will be more but not that much more.

this is for gravel tire cutting lesson one and those are the tires where the most chunking and wearing happens, for an example.

How dare you attempt to inform Smike on any tire related issue. I thought he was the all knowing Guru w/all the right answers
Im sorry, couldnt help it. After seeing his post clarifying what tire cutting was, I found that too funny

RA1 can be shaved to 4/32nds and are good until corded (spec tire for many of us that race).

Thanks for the info jerdeitzel. I'm gonna have to do some research on the Michelin competition tires.

Hoosier, Goodyear, Continental, Avon, Pirelli and most other companies make non-dot race slicks. When I ran PPIHC this year Rhys Millen had non-dot hankooks that I have never seen before.

The A6's will work very well cold. And are better in the cold than any other DOT-R on the market. They do however heat up quickly and can become heat soaked. A quick spray of water does the trick for cooling them down.

The slicks I mentioned will be faster than the A6. I think something like a hoosier R25A would work well for cold temps.

By oldest, you mean a lot of smoke, mirrors, and old guy "science".

Tread patterns are more the often not understood.

I was thinking about this again this morning. One option is using tire warmers to artificially bring the tires up to temp. Most sanctioning bodies allow this, SCCA AutoX does not. But you can leave the line with tires at the perfect temp!
