2013 Pikes Peak Build by EvoD

Well this has been a long time coming. And obviously we are a little late in getting this going. But here we go!

Lots of work to do and not much time! We are really excited to have some big sponsors on board this year. And we could not have done it without them.

Big thank you to Recaro, Pirelli, Enkei, Whiteline, etc.

Went to the shop last night to start the tear down. Luckily all that was really left was the interior. Took the doors off for easier access. Got started on ripping all that out. Once the carpet was out I found this guy!

I'll take that as a good sign.

I then spent the next 2 hours scrapping the sound deadening off the floor. Terrence worked on removing the dash and sun room. Finally on to the wiring harness, rear deck and miscellaneous crap that needs to come out for the cage.

Lastly, we worked on prepping several areas for the roll cage pads to be welded in. After a long day at work I was completely exhausted and could barely hold on to the drill to scrape paint off. Terrence did probably 3/4 of that mini project LOL

I'll be up there again Friday and this weekend to do some more.

Are you using .120 for the cage or are you trying for a 2500lb car with .095 tubing? What size tires and how much hp? Keeping the heater core for the defroster? What final gear will you use 4.5 or 4.8? Think about an oxygen bottle with a mask under your balaclava! If you make it to the top you'll join a historic fraternity. It was a long day at the top waiting for the event to finish last year but the fans will make up for it when you finally drive down. Good luck get plenty of rest before you go....

Glad to see what happened last year did not deter you from going for it again. All the best to all of you!

we use 1.75" tube diameter so we can use .095" wall thickness for a 3000lb car. the tube is actually stronger then the 1.50"x.120 due to the higher I, and lighter per ft.

We will be running a 285 Pirelli Slick.
HP will depend on some of our sponsors. No less than 400whp. Hopefully in the 550-600 range.
Don't think we are keeping the heater core. Never had any issues with that last year even with it being way cold during practices days.
We would love to run the 3.91? But again, comes down to finances.
I will be running o2 this year. There is strong evidence we were running under hypoxic conditions last year. And even with my physical training, I am not at elevation normally so we are not going to risk it.

There are tons of people that race up there that don't live in Denver or areas of high elevation and its mostly the 50 and over crowd who bring oxygen. Have you considered that it might've been something else? Were you running with windows up? Could it have been fumes in the car? Numerous people made comments about something looking on fire or smoking in the corners leading up to the off.

I ran windows down last year for the first time (required to wear arm-restraints in that case) and loved it in comparison to other years of having them up. It did suck in the rain, but thought fresh air was great! I think it also helped keep the windshield clear. Defrosters are a bit of a gamble - by the time you'll need one in the car, the chance of the road being record worthy is out the window, but I don't know how Brianne managed to get to the top without a major mishap...when the car got to the summit, you couldn't see inside it at all!

Did you guys ever arrive at a conclusion as to what led to the off last year? As someone who's run there several times, I can't fathom attempting that particular corner at the speeds which you were going. Did you guys get out of sync with the notes or was a case of thinking you had a better read on the road than the notes you had put together?

We've had our share of mixups in our cars, and even highly experienced folks make errors too - ACP at engineers in 2010. Even saw the after effect of a stretch of road that looked straight'ish result in 3 or 4 cars going off because that 'straight' turned out to have a blind off-camber bend mid way down it (Rally Idaho 2007) which we noted as a double caution because it was so deceptive. In any event, guess the navvie talk doesn't mean anything since they've been banned.

Need more 's at the top this year - save room for donuts!

Dave

Cool stuff, looking forward to watching this car. I've never run the peak before, but I've been up there, and as someone with asthma who lives at sea level, I couldn't breath for crap. I felt that way the whole way through Colorado actually and it was the first time in my life I had bad asthma attacks.

Dave, I'm not going to disuss that here. If you want to grab a beer sometime I can tell you.

I really didn't have any big issues breathing last year. But I was a smoker for 16 years. And have only been 15 months off of them. I've done intense cardio traning since then. And I know it made a huge difference for me last year. I expect this year I will have an easier time. BUT, we did run with the windows up last year. That may have caused some stuffyness in car.

I don't remember any fumes or smoke leaking into the car. Though that did happen day one of practice last year LOL.

Like you, I prefer racing with my windows down. I would like to do windows up, racing net and arm restraints this year. As you can never have too much safety. (learned the hard way)

We will have vents allowing for better air ventilation hopefully. I do remember having issues with my visor fogging up during practice days. Yuri too, so we ran visors up. Not really ideal there. But another lesson for next year. Anti-fog treatment.

Anyway, thanks for the comments Dave. Looking forward to seeing you and everyone else at the top

P.S. Hypoxia can affect people of all ages, regardless of acclimation or physical well being.
