Hey all - I am new to Evo's, and am picking up a Evo X with some mods (about 440 w hp - built motor) - and need some advice for the track.
I'm not new to trackdays, just new to Evo's - Wondering what are 'must haves' for the track - i.e. - Oil cooler, sway bars, etc.
Car already has Eiback Pros on it - Probably going to do Carbotech XP12/10's.
Other than that I'm open to suggestions - I.e. - What wheel/tire combo is preferred for this car? I am used to Hoosier/Dunlop/Kuhmo slicks on my Z06 (which was my track car) - Not sure what you guys like to use, or what fits best.
Not looking for an all out race car...I just wanted to try something different on the track to see if I like it. Plan on using the car for 80% track, and 20% street.
Thanks in advance - any other suggestions you guys have, I'm all ears.

Congrats on the new purchase. I'm not sure how strong the Evo X is at that level so I would get a 100 oct(E85 if you want to bring a small trailer full of fuel) tune done with lower boost and correct timing to keep EGT's down. I'd also get a laptop and cable to check the tune/log it and read up on tuning.Sometimes small changes need to be made to the tune with different fuels/conditions.
I honestly don't know about the oil cooler, a bigger one is always a good idea. Running heavier oil is also recommended. I know the 4G63 has oil issues around tight right hand corners on a good tire. A bigger rear bar is a good idea. Get something adjustable to fine tune to your driving style.
Carbotechs are extremely good. Upgrade the fluid to and remove the dust shields to help keep temps down. You will have to fab heat shields for the ABS sensor if they are like the evo 8-9. The carbotechs require a certain break in that I'm sure you are familiar with. Hope this helps. The Evo is an extremely well handling/fun car and you will have a blast at the track.

Welcome to the evo community. I don't have much experience with evo x but know several who track them on regular base. Brake ducks are a wise upgrade. if you plan to run that power level on track, then you should upgrade oil cooler and radiator if not already. Evo x can get fuel cavitation at 1/3 tank, so keep the gas at 1/2 tank or higher.
Enkei rpf1 wheels seems the be the popular choice for track wheels, light and cheap. What's your objective at the track, competition or just seat time. No need to spend money on expensive Rcomp tires if your not competing. Are you looking for tires to run on street and track or going to swap wheels at the track. Nitto nt01, toyo r888 or ra1 are good choice for semi Rcomp. You can drive short distance on street with them.
As far as suspension upgrade, get some set time in the car first before you decide what you need to change to fit your driving preference.
Some modest aero upgrades will also help, front splitter and rear wing.
Also look into safety equipments since its mostly going to be a track car. Roll bar, seats, harness, Hans.
Good luck with the new track toy.

Thanks, guys...Honda-Guy - I won't be competing, just doing HPDE's with friends.
Will probably get a separate set of rims/tires for it so I can just swap them out when heading to the track (have a trailer, so no need to drive on the 'track tires').
I'll find out what upgrades to the cooling/oiling system it has, and see how it runs.
I have harnesses already, the stock Recaros are not good enough for track duty?

If you get separate wheels and tires, then I would say go with nt01 tires for advance drivers.
I would not recomend any type of harness (4 or 5 points) without roll bar on track. If you only have oem seat, then just stick with oem seatbelt. Its a safety issue.
I see that you are from north jersey. We've probably been to same events before. I run with nasa, pca, bmw, TrackDaze, scca pdx at njmp, pocono, Watkins glen, Monticello, summit point.
We are organizing an event at njmp on november 23-24. The last two events we did have 20-25 evos there. There will be someone there with an evo x that you can talk to point you in the right direction.

Geezus, 20 - 25 Evos at one event? In the Pacific Northwest we're lucky to get about 3. Heck last month a few shops sponsored a NASA 4 cylinder AWD challenge, and we only had 6 Evo's show up!Originally Posted by honda-guy

If you do run a harness with a factory seat, be sure it has ASM technology. Schrothe makes one that is not only street legal, but allowed at most tracks. Typically a 4 point won't be allowed unless it's an ASM belt on any of our tracks on the opposite side of the continent.
I'd go with the previous suggestions for modding. Get it on the track first, and see what suits your needs. I also have an IX, so not too sure about X weakpoints. Often people mod the heck out of their cars and take it out to a track day and realise their car is FAR above their skill levels. I'm a huge fan of going stock and making improvements over time that suit your driving needs.

Cool...I'm sure we've crossed paths before...I just got done doing two days each at Monticello full course, and New York Safety Track.
We have a private day coming up at New York Safety Track soon, if you're interested, I'll see if there is room.
This is my Z06 which is what I usually run on the track...

Nice, which club did you run with at Monticello? I thought they don't allow clubs to run DE there anymore. I was there last year with NARRA doing TT but this year they won't let NARRA do TT, just race.
NY safety is too far of a drive for me. If I go that far, we usually plan a trip with a few of us.

Sorta off topic but what'd you think of NYST? Assuming you're doing a member track day?Originally Posted by turbo50mike

I was excited for the new track coming but even after paying the money to be a member it's a fairly pricey track. I can do the Glen for just about the same price.

Just for clarification, or incase I missed it... You bought a X GSR with a regular manual box, correct? The MR's and or SE's with the paddle-shift do not make good track cars, and the trans tend to overheat quickly.
My advise is to get a safe, conservative road course tune on the car. Stick with pump gas if possible.

Monticello was with Guardian Angel Motorsports - It was a 2-day charity event. They do it every year...I think it was about $1,000 for both days, but it's worth it for a track I don't get to run often. Originally Posted by honda-guy

New York Safety Track is FUN! Verrrrrryyyyy dangerous, but FUN (NO runoff, no guardrails, no curbing). It's not fast - I was 3rd gear in the Z06 the ENTIRE track with the exception of the straight (Maybe ~130 mph). But it's a workout...Lots of blind off camber turns...Definately a track to check out at least once.Originally Posted by Maximal

Yes. Got the 5 speed GSR. Has a Shep 4.3 final. Originally Posted by grillpt

Does this look safe to you???

Also speechless. The idea of putting a fat man in black leather pants and then having him kneel on the pavement to take a picture is terrifying.
Or am I missing the point?
