I've been on the limiter in a few spots at our bigger sites lately too. Digging through the old STU threads, I found a few posts from people running a higher 7800 RPM rev limit. I may try my luck with that next season.
Even on the stock 17x8? not a fan of pinching tires really, but if it's a little narrower I can work with 255. Will probably never run the 265s even if allowed. I've actually been at the 7800 limiter, but I'm in an MR so my 2nd is a little shorter.

^^^ Someone correct me, but pretty sure 2nd is the same ratio even on the 6sp gearbox...

Looks like the MR is a touch taller in 2nd than 5speed.

oh, and a 245/40/17 *Spec was slightly wider than a 255/40/17 RE71R, (as witnessed on 9" wide wheels).
This could be related to a particular size...my set of 275 RE71s was about 1/4" wider than the same set of RS3s on the same rims...we will see how 265s will end up...

I didn't think that to be the case because when I had 285/30/18s and the 6spd with a 7800 limiter I only got to about 61-62 in 2nd. Interesting to see the actual ratios.

I noticed the same and scratched my head a bit. Section widths are in line though so the smaller tread width of the 265/18 doesn't make much sense to me.

I don't think those numbers can be trusted and I see them more like a reference point. Once someone gets a set and mount it on the wheel, we will know how things really are...

This thread lists the MR as having a different FD
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/fu...ar-ratios.html

And this lists the 9 MR's FD as 4.58:1

Nothing strange about that, IMHO, the 17 inch tires have a wider side wall. Form my understanding tirerack has been known to be pretty accurate with their sectional width. If I were building for STU I would pick the 255/17 over the 265/18. Wider and cheaper, win win in my book. What you guys need is 265/40or35/17, even wider than the 255s. That would probably be closer to the 275s the C5 are running in sectional width. Start writing to Bridgestone.

17x10s fit with 255 and have been done before:

But it seems you have to run different offsets front and rear.

I think you may be confused. During Nats this year, my 05 MR with the 6 speed at stock rev limit hit 62mph on 255/40/17 tires (telemetry confirmed) on course. There is a video on the BS thread confirming this. With a 7800 rev limit, I would expect an STU car with 255/40/17 to hit 64+mph.

The 2nd gear in 5 speed and 6 both go to 60mph on the top of 2nd with stock tires and rev limit.

Not confused. I was talking about the early stages of my SM build, 4 years ago, on 285/30/18 Kumho V710s, not an STU car on 255/40/17. I checked the calculator and my old tune and I actually still had the stock limiter, which should have gotten me to 64 according to the gear calculator, but it sure as hell seems like it was a whole lot slower than that now...

The calculator shows that 255/40/17 with a stock 7600 limiter should get you to 64 as well. I'm thinking it's probably a couple mph off because it's showing that my 2014 setup (285 BFG w/ 5spd and 8400 limiter) should get to 70, but my data shows 68. If you take that into consideration, then it's quite feasible that my old 6spd setup was closer to 62 than 64.

Edit: All of the above assumes that the 5 and 6spd have the same final gear ratio. If not, then the 6spd is about 1mph slower in 2nd, which would make 61-62 even more feasible.

I thought the MR's is ever so slightly shorter than the 5spds..

For me, not doing any pinching/rolling, i'll probably just stick with 245/45 - mind u I'm not nationally competitive and even have a few bits preventing me from being totally legal

It is, but I remember the difference being 2nd on the 5 speed was 60mph and 2nd on the 6 speed was 59.9 something mph (my memory is a little fuzzy), very insignificant.
