2015 STU Discussion!
If they want a non-square setup they can just go narrower than 255 on the side they want, would be the counter argument I would assume.
Completely crazy idea: Some of the Porsche drivers didn't like the idea of 255s all around and suggested writing letters to make the tire width limit an average of the front and rear. If such a proposal went into effect and in the completely, totally unlikely event that it also applied to AWD cars, 285/30R18 up front and 245/40R17 in the rear would be an interesting combo. The outside diameters are almost identical (one half revolution per mile difference) so it could theoretically work
You are not wrong! He was one of the guys who used that setup. I don't think it looks bad either! Lots of FWD guys would have great success with such a combo. For our type of AWD cars with 60% of weight in the front, you could increase the grip to get close between the front and rear, but front will always have to do more work, so having a bit more tire on that end would not hurt at all!
Ive always thought a 315/275 setup would be great on an Evo for balance considering the weight distribution. The downside, front tires generally clean up OPR and rears pick it up. I use rotating tires as a means to clean that up along with getting even wear.
On the other hand, when I was running in SM (even in ESP trim), rears were working much harder and temps were pretty even between fronts and rears. I think you have to set-up the car to use both ends the best way possible...higher HP level amplifies this even more!
there is a reason no evo's run staggered tire sizes even though it has been tried...
it sucks.
It works on FWD cars because they aren't trying to put any power down with their rear tires.

My assumption on this is with excessive rear grip, you can do more things to help front grip. Moving some of that front weight transfer to the rear.
Either way, being able to rotate tires is pretty critical to me.
I like rotating tires also but if the car was faster with a staggered setup I would definitely do it.
Having driven an ASP car with 285s, there's no way the car would be better with less tire in the rear.

Anybody running in STU next season with an Evo X? I was running 245 on the stock 18x8.5's, but with the new rules, I'm thinking of getting wider wheels. I'm a bit unsure of 9" or 9.5" and 255 vs 265. Has anybody tested on the X? I don't want to roll fenders. Thanks for the help.
