People keep parroting "raw" but that's not my goal, really. Most serious performance cars come raw out of the box as a side effect of making the car perform.
i tracked an s2k ap1 for three years before i track my evo. if and when i ever get bored with the evo, i'd probably go back to s2k or E46 M. s2k really teach you how to drive and be smooth. if you aren't smooth, it will bite you. there'e a few things you can do to reduce the snap oversteer. i got mind pretty stable when i sold it. e46 M are not slow at all, they are as fast as my evo in TT3 class. two of the TT3 track record in northeast are held by e46, both stock power.
with you're car selection, seems like you want a car with a lot of HP. go with light chassis and LS swap. i've seen some E36 with LS swap go for $15k

I was considering the E46 for a while, but I think the strange maintenance schedule of the S54 motor scared me off.

I do like that the E46, S2K and older cars come with way less nannies.
It came down to a C5 Z06 and the Evo for me. I love the Evo but always wonder what if.
One thing to consider is a Pro series truck or Ex cup, busch, ARCA car. The trucks are lightest, have brakes and plenty of tire. All the suspension bits are top shelf and very reasonably priced. A roundy rounder is easily converted to road course use. A crate motor has plenty of suds and gets you back to pump. Easy to work on. They pop up in the high teens / mid twenty's with spares.

The >4s left handers with >1.1g starve oil in the LS motors, but the dry sump in the LS7 reduces that and the added tank expansion mod ($300) stops it altogether.

Every other day I consider selling off the evo only if I found the right E46 M3 or E92 to trade. I love the evo and wish I could have both, but like you… the thought of NA RWD is intriguing going into year seven of owning the evo.

I haven't been pushing it hard enough at t-hill. I just broke a confidence barrier at my last event so I think that I can reel in those 5-7s.
Not sure why I'm ready to leave the platform though.
