Thinking outside the Evo!
Well, I own a 2013 Evo, but I can't stand the thought of some mustang guy just slamming into me for no reason, then i'm out a car I owe a lot of money on.
The Evo is my daily driver, my HPDE 4 car is a 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL 5-speed.
Very cheap, very reliable ( just a simple NA FWD car ) and if a mustang plows into it, it's not as huge a loss as a newer Evo.
However, looking at the list of cars you can get, I would say your budget is way larger than mine.
If money is no object, then Z06, C5 or up.
Good luck.

I got the wife a 2012 cooper S with the DSG and I'm really impressed with it. For stock everything it's one of the more fun cars I've driven to date. Esp on technical mountain roads for weekend getaways. My idea is to have a fun, multipurpose car like it that's slower then the race car. This way I don't start turning "it" into a race car
Then when I want to attack the track I just open the other garage.

I've had mine for almost a year now. I still really like the car. It's great fun. Especially now with 300wtq.
My one thing I hated about the car was the OEM suspension setup. The rear dampening/spring rate pairing was horrible. Going to aftermarket made the car ride 1,000x better.
On track it was fun too but I ended up tracking my 10 and enjoying it much more.
I have a thread on here about my Fiesta ST here if anybody is interested in the car.

There's a very strong/likely chance that I'm going to finally sell off my DE prepped IX, and move into an E92 M3.
I've just always wanted to be in an M3, and am thinking that I'll probably get into racing rented spec miatas and have the E92 as my new DE car/toy.

The fragility of the clamshell is a huge detractor for me. My friend has an Exige that he's selling for that very reason. He tracks it, but he's super worried about the design. I think he's planning on moving into a used FRS to beat the **** out of lol.
People keep parroting "raw" but that's not my goal, really. Most serious performance cars come raw out of the box as a side effect of making the car perform.
It's not really the power that I want, I think it's just the balance across the board that comes with that power in my examples. We all know you can make power easy with the evo, so that's not it. If I just wanted power, I could slap a turbo on my car and go.
I was considering the E46 for a while, but I think the strange maintenance schedule of the S54 motor scared me off.

I do like that the E46, S2K and older cars come with way less nannies.

C6 is one of my other temptations, but tires and fanbois all over.
The NSX is great, but the price and availability of EVERYTHING is going up. Lovefab's car is really amazing and they've done some really great swaps, but I've heard unless you go extreme they are getting underwhelming with the availability of really powerful, well handling cars. At that cost, I just can't see the difficulty being worth it (still a great, beautiful car IMO).
If it weren't for the evo, I'd have to settle on an S2k IMHO. I have a couple of friends with setups that impress the hell out of me. Running 10-15mph slower at the end of the straights, but pulling the same or slightly better lap times as my X. Their cars are absolutely on rails, and if the tail gets happy they just stay neutral on the throttle and let go of the wheel - car takes care of itself. That only seems to happen when it's getting really hot and greasy, and it's really probably one of the most enjoyable track cars I've ever been in. Completely different feeling and involvement, and way less push and more direction than the evo.
It's tough to say though - you keep flopping between the triangle you identified. Since rare = exspensive & unreliable and you want relatively cheap, it means the only thing left to give is the fast... and nobody wants that
.

However I don't agree with the "car takes care of itself". You have to give it very focused energy to be fast in them, compared to say an AWD car or a longer wheel base RWD car. "Letting go of the wheel" in one would put you on the roof here at Thunderhill.
Take these two videos for example
Semi fast:
Really fast:
That said, again I still agree on the S2K, I've been very tempted.

i have a vid of a guy i know in an S2k around BW13. he definitely had his hands full. but that's the appeal to me.
driving a GTR isn't exactly going to make me a better driver, in comparison :P
i get the most enjoyment out of having to do a better job as a driver. learning and improving is the point for me.
if not for my IX, i'm pretty sure i'd be tracking an S2k.

i tracked an s2k for 3 years before i got the evo RS. if i ever sell the evo, i'd build another s2k to track. i'm glad i started tracking with the s2k, because it thought me a lot about driving. the ap1 has snap oversteer and could be unforgiving if you're not smooth or have quick reaction. with the right suspension mods and rear wing, my car was pretty stable by the time i was done with it. used s2k are going up in prices now, a lot of kids buying them cause they were cheap, and crashing them because they dont know how to handle the car. the AP1 also has some weaknesses that can be address pretty easy.
this was my s2k 5 years ago
