Auto-X with an FP Black?
Auto-X with an FP Black?
I sold my 04 STi that was setup perfect for auto-x and I know I will still occassionally want to hit up an event. Has anyone AutoX'd an Evo with a Black?Car has 2.3 stroker and suspension mods and 17x9.5 rpf1s with 255 Star Specs, I may even slap an R Comp on the stockers or buy a wider track setup for R Comps.
I know its possible, but does anybody hve any EXP on how laggy/touchy it will be waiting on boost and when it finally hits?
the 2.3L will help with the black, so you should do fine, just not optimal. even still, it will be plenty responsive to have some fun in. what cams do you have?
a green with an anti-surge housing would OWN on an autox course. or maybe a red? I'm a huge fan of small turbos, though.

oh, and welcome!

But if you're just doing an occasional event for fun it's not going to hold you back. You'll still have a good time. 2.3L will definitely help a bit.
In the past few years a lot of the local Evo owners are all about cobbling together giant turbo setups on their Evos with no regard for spool. Turbos that make the FP black look small combined with stock blocks and restrictive setups. They'll usually show up for one event, but get frustrated and leave when they can't get their turbos to spool anywhere on the course. So it is possible to go too big to have fun, but I think you could still have a good time on a proper FP Black setup.
But if you really want a fun do-everything car, a Red/Green is going to be more fun in every scenario other than high-speed straight-line pulls.
If you're getting the single scroll turbine housing, get a green. If you can get an MHI twin scroll turbine housing, you'll be able to get away with the red. I would not attempt autoX with a black. It won't be very fun. You want to be able to hit full boost below 4k rpms, or close to it.
If you were building the car specifically for autocross, you wouldn't want the FP Black. The Evo makes up a lot of time accelerating out of corners and there aren't many long straight sections on an autocross course, so giving up spool in exchange for peak power numbers isn't helpful.

I can see why, though, it didn't look very fun.
Plus, it would be hard to drive with such a peaky power band.
Not that autox is the be-all of motorsports, but the cars definitely weren't cut out for it.

I wouldn't auto-X with a 2.3L FP black. Sure the extra displacement helps but it would still be too laggy. A 2.3L with a MHI green or a BBK Full/Blouch 1.0XT would make for a fun auto-X setup
Maybe it doesn't matter if you autox real infrequently but to me two things really kill autox fun. Terminal understeer and perpetual lag. Take the black to the track or get a green/1.0xtr for autox.
i built my car for road courses, but it does really well at autox with an FP HTA71. i actually went too small and will be upgrading (i run pump gas), but i think it is the perfect AX turbo. stock spool but more power. can't beat it.
i will add: at my local events, our courses are smaller and stock cars regularly beat the modified ones and usually end up with FTD. i contribute it to: 1. better drivers and 2. improperly-modded cars.
i only mention all this in case you decide you want something more responsive.
either way, you will still have fun. i did in my civic. just keep your momentum going because you may not be able to take advantage of the point/shoot characteristics of an Evo.
p.s. my CHRA is for sale, if you are interested :P

Just for reference, I had a standard compression 2.3L w/ ported BBK Full a couple years ago and it felt perfect everywhere except up top (which isn't a huge problem with the rev limitations of the 2.3 anyway). The response was amazing, almost like a naturally aspirated car... 32psi by 3300rpm, and peak torque (440ftlb on a MD) at 3900rpm. That's the sort of response you want for autox. While it won't be a nationals winning setup, I think you'll still have fun with it. I drove my friend's 35R Sti a few years ago and it was laggy, but was still a blast once you got going. I assume the FP Black will have similar response characteristics. You'll just have to learn to left foot brake so you can brake boost
