Inrush current magnitude has nothing to do with attached load. Duration of inrush current is affected by load.

From doing some reading, a typical 15k btu RV ac unit will take 3300 watts on startup, which is 30 amps on 110ac. Better get a badass generator...lol

Ya no doubt. I was already considering a 3k or 2 parallel 2k's with some kind of box up on the nose of the trailer.


But isn't 3300w / 120v = 27.5a?

Yes, I just did my calc from 110...lol. But generators are usually rated in Watts. 120v, especially from a generator, usually isn't a full 120v.


But if startup is 3300, a 4k gen would be fine.

so sorry, you are correct. duration of inrush current can also have a bearing on whether or not the generator will run the desired equipment. i.e.: breaker could trip or it could just kill the generator altogether. much like it did in the OP's case.
