The better choice......

Since this place is dead, I figured I'd try and get a discussion started.

I'm running in ASP this coming year again, with 285mm Hoosiers. Last year I ran on the 18x10.5" NT03+M wheels (seemingly the wheel of choice for ASP evos).

I still have the 18x10.5" NT03+M's. I also have a set of 18x10" TC105X's, which are about 3lbs per wheel, lighter than the NTO3M's.

If you had to choose would you take the wider, heavier wheel? Or the lighter, narrower wheel to perform better for autox?

Thanks for your insight! Poll is up as well!

The 285s really seem to like that extra 1/2" of wheel. I was in the same predicament having 10" RPF1 and 10.5" PF01 with very similar weight difference. In the end, I decided to take the extra weight for more wheel.

Always wider. It's not apples to apples but in the miata world it's been proven with lap times that a 225 tire is faster on a 9" wheel vs an 8" wheel. Same exact wheel, only difference being width and offset.

Stretching the sidewall a hair takes some compliance out of it but gives better turn in grip.

NT03's all the way. I run the 10.5 with 265's on my STU car. Nexens seem to be flush. RE71r's seem to look a hair stretched. I would not want to run any less width for 285's.

This is what I was definitely leaning towards, but I always had that thought in the back of my head, "Is a half inch really worth it, especially when the wheel is heavier".

Thanks for the input so far guys!

It'd basically boil down to the wider heavier wheel being better for AX and the lighter narrower one being better for RR. For me the lighter one would brake better and launch out of the corner better over the duration of the race because I don't transition as quickly. I've run the 295 hoho's on a 10" wheel and they were very happy.

I suspect steering angle has a big effect on it as well.

Steering angle and the way the car changes direction. You really tend to snap the car into corners in autocross, and require very quick response from the tire in slaloms. On a road course, not so much.
