Track turbo kit

So I believe the time has finally come. I have been competitive using the stock turbo for as long as possible, but my future plans are to compete at a higher level of time attack so I'm in the market for a turbo kit. The options I have identified and interested in purchasing so far are the CBRD RB kit, will either use a Gen II 3076, or EFR 7163, or Full race kit with the same turbos. Currently, I'm on a stock block 2.0 litter, future plans include having Tony at UMS build me a 2.2 out of a 4G64. I would like to not have to purchase a new kit after the build, so this setup needs to be equally effective on both engines. With the stock block I would be happy with 450 whp, but would like to be above 550 whp after the engine build. Another restriction is the turbo kit will need to be recirculated as three of the tracks I attend have sound restrictions. I am also not interested in stock frame turbos as I am tired of replacing turbo bolts.

Thoughts, impressions, and other kits to consider would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

George

Gen2 3076, or a Garret g25-660. I wouldn't bother with a 3071.

Thank you Sir, by 3071 I meant 3076... Any thoughts on a kit? For a while full race was offering the G25-660 in their kit but no more?

Out of curiosity, what bolts are failing/falling out of your stock turbo setup?

Since you want a recirculated gate kit, your options get quite narrow.

The 7163 is too small on an Evo. An IWG 7670 kits from full race would be good.

Or see if full race can build a recirculated external gate setup for one of the Garret options. IIRC, Garret does have an IWG hot side for the G25-660, but it's not a Vband outlet. Just call them or email, they're super helpful and responsive.

Normally I'd just say ETS, but they only offer VTA gates.

I used to have that issue. It helps to make sure they're tightened to spec, 55ftlbs IIRC. They fall out way less often lol

Learned that lesson long ago and drilled the bolt heads to safety wire all 3 together, then drilled the side of the nuts and tied those two together. PITA to install, but once and done. Just a tad cheaper then going all in on another setup unless your jumping to a different class/org.

Drilling stainless steel bolts.... brave you are lol. And a big drill bit budget.

Or did you get different, non-OEM, bolts?

All oem. The original set I still use 3 of was drill press drilled by KevinD while I was there for my first e85 conversion way back in 2009. I think he went through 3 bits only Now though I have a rig that holds everything in place and makes it way less painful. https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pr...asp?RecID=9718 and https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pr...asp?RecID=5738

Don't bother with CBRD, Chad doesn't care about evo stuff anymore, just Porsches. If I were you i'd go with a Driven Fab IWG EFR kit. My second choice would be a Full Race G25 kit.

ETS can do a G25 kit. I have the 660 on my car and am very happy with the performance. The turbo is also must easier to package and smaller than a comparable Borg.

The only turbo's I would be looking at personally would be the G-series and the BW EFR's. I am very leary of internal gates on any good turbo, if you engine flow well you are very likely going to have boost creep issues.....

I have a question about top mount turbo kits for track duty. Currently on FP Red @ 620, my EVO is perfect and turn key. So of course my dumbass is looking at upgrading again. But for track duty (time Attack & road course) I am considering next level myself. Specifically a top mount set up that will free up my remaining dry sump port for trans cooler.

Whats the trick I hear about with changing the hot side on a bigger turbo for quicker spool? Not restricted to recirc like poster, I’d like to know what next level kit with custom hot/cold side wheels gets me off the apex with minimum lag. Twin scroll preferably. Hoping technology has closed the old saying you can’t have it both ways. Is 750ish realistic on a track set up?

Top mount is fairly less than ideal in our cars. It causes the turbo tonactuslly take up more room. And your moving an object (the turbocharger) that weight 30-40lbs even higher, raising CG.

Also, the dry sump pump is WAY to high volume for a trans cooler, and it's far away from any possible ports on the trans for cooler lines. Just get a small electric pump for the trans cooler.

And, that's if you even need one. You should really run a temp gauge to see if it's actually needed before doing all that work.
