Surge tank?

As I get ready to upgrade my fuel system for E85, I’m wondering when a surge tank becomes Important on an autox/track car? I don’t see much chatter on this forum about them, so I’m thinking it’s not important for an Evo unless it’s an all out race car on slicks?

Even then it's not really needed. I had one originally, a full FT3 certified 3 gallon vertical cell, external walbro, the works, just for those safety scenarios but then I found out it had to follow the "Fuel Cell" rules AND I still ran out of gas. E85 is cool for those 15 min sessions and is fine on the stock tank. Beyond that we're looking at a $4-10k investment in a racing fuel cell setup with integrated surge. Evo X's on the other hand seem to require one past half tank.

Another thing I’ve wondered about is the reliability of the stock feed line. This video is always in the back of my head.

This is scary! It's for reasons like this that I keep a fire extinguisher in my trunk.

STM and Radium sell a kit to replace the under section of the fed line with 6am race hose.

I'm not really a 6am kinda guy, more like an 8am, and even then my lines take a minute to flow correctly

If the left hander is long enough, even e9's require a solution too..

We replaced the complete stock fuel system excluding the tank because I was getting starvation on right hand turns when below 1/4 tank. This was on 200tw tires. Nothing worse than having a good lap and it starts cutting out mid turn

My builder used a radium tank, with external pump and fabricated a bracket that holds it to the rear strut tower. Not sure if this is relevant for you but no issues since it was all installed and I feel better knowing that the stock lines were all replaced.

the non-AYC USDM evo 9's have bigger gas tanks, i've never heard of fuel starve issue on left handers.

i got fuel cut once when i was under a quarter tank on track, right hander too. honestly if u're under a quarter tank on track, you're very shortly going to be out of fuel entirely.

This is interesting.. .did not know that.
I used to chase a weird knock/loss of power on exit of long left handers (and we have some 180 deg lefhanders on our track)... noticed it was fuel level dependant...

My surge tank set up. Mainly to have extra fuel when low fuel light comes on. Peace of mind on long turns to.

Twin external fuel pumps.
