Has anyone mounted a harness in without having a steep downward angle on the straps and without using the baby seat tether hook (both of which seem like unsafe options)?

I mounted mine to the rear lap belt points. It's about a 30-45 degree angle which is supposed to be fine. You could also attach it to on of the rear shoulder belt points. Using the middle seat shoulder belt works great for the driver belt, but that doesn't leave anything to use for the passenger.

if you look in the how to forums a guy did a great install of an automatic retraction harness.
he used the mounting point that is on the rear shelf- so it is nearly level. I have a harness link installed in my car there too, just cant get the rest of the system to mount as neat.

So what you want to avoid is the clip on harness attach type harness. The eye bolts for that gear are 12mm, the seat bolts are 10mm 1.25 pitch. And it is darn near impossible to find hardware to work that is 10mm.

btw guys you talked me out of ordering the velcro.

re shelf points, you have to remove and reinstall the rear shelf cover, not to bad.

I think this is the how to he's referring to, in case some of you don't want to search.

And $50 for that? What a deal! The link doesn't seem to be working now, but that's a steal for a DOT approved racing harness if they're still around.

If you are flexible on color.
Discontinued, or previous year's model
and those are dirt cheap. Still real schroth harnesses, just a lot cheaper.

I was about to be sarcastic and say that at that price and with me tucking them out of sight between races, I would take it even if it was rainbow colored... then I saw the colors available and "multicolor" is listed there But seriously, these would be a very good belt, and purple should match the interior of an Evo8 quite nicely.

Now here's a question for someone who is savy in Scrhoth seatbelts. From what I understand, the ASD is a plastic piece that holds bunched up webbing on the inside and releases it to keep the body pointed forward in a frontal impact (to keep the 2 people from bonking heads or being thrown sideways). Does anybody know if it would be possible to buy a passenger belt and remove the ASD then reinstall it on the other side to make it a driver's belt? I understand this would void the warranty if they found out, but I have seen an ASD that had been removed and it doesn't look all that complicated. Anyone know for sure?

Actually, I think the tether hook is pretty solid (especially if it is just being used for autocross). If you don't want to use that though and don't want to drill holes either, you can always unbolt the tether hook and use that hole to mount an anchor more to your liking...

JW that's exactly what I did. I don't recommend using the hook itself, but mounting the belt in place of it, or if you really want, get a longer bolt (something like 7/16 by 1 1/2") and mount the seatbelt underneath the hook.
