seat straps

hey guys I have a bone head idea,

I just ordered 25 yards of 4" hook and loop strap material. I think I will "bandage" myself in the stock seat . One around my chest and one like a lap belt.
I suppose there may be better tie down methods, like one over each shoulder, like rambo bullet belts, that go around the seat back .
Seems like it should work pretty well. Then put the stock seat harness belt on over .

Anyone else who thinks prehistoric like me, I will have a little left to dole out. After all I have 25 yards hook and 25 yards loop.

And if you car flips over or catches on fire you'll never get out. I would doubt any legitimate sanctioning body would knowingly allow you to do that, and I sure wouldn't do that on the street. There are aftermarket belts that go around your body and seat that are legal. Maybe Schroth makes one?

yep, hook and loop = velcro, but I still think you're crazy. $100 will get you a decent harness that will do wonders, not to mention you have Recaro seats that would complete an outfit with the harness to keep you firmly in place. The worry about using just any ol' material is the elasticity of it. Seatbelts have much technology and testing done to determine how elastic the shoulder belts and lap belts should be, including the inside and outside shoulder belts in 4 point harnesses to avoid the heads of the passenger and driver from colliding into each other. Just my opinion, but you might want to reconsider.

I know that you wouldn't be allowed to do that in Solo 2 in my region. I don't have a harness, but use the seatbelt tensioning system to lock me in place. Just scoot the seat way back, pull the seatbelt away from you very quick to get it to lock, hold it tight while you move the seat up. I guarantee you it will hold you in tighter than your death trap idea.

yeah I like the harness idea. I'ts just that this is also a daily driver and the wife would never let me hear the end of it if I left a harness in the car. (that's my proplem) but that is why I want something that is easy to remove. ( I have a three point that clips in but can't get the eye bolts to use it, that would "bolt in")

Here is how I see the velcro, you put it on then you put the seat belt on. There is NO way a seatbelt holds you in the seat well enough to drive a road course. I don't care if you weld the straps together, I tried it locked up and it wasn't noticably better than stock.

I don't race, I drive on track days, so a sanctioning body is not an issue. The velcro is to glue me to the seat, Not save me in an accident. So for about $20 in material and labor I am going to have a very good alternative to a race setup, though not as good as one, but suits my needs better.
If I could, I wouild have a cage and a better seat, real harnesses, a trailer, spare tires.......more events......

$100? Where can I get a decent $100 harness? So far, I've been looking at Schroth and the cheapest I could find was about $150?

I know what hook and loop is, and I sure wouldn't want to be strapped to my seat with the stuff in the event of a crash. How long is it going to take you to get 10 yards of 4" velcro apart while your car is upside down? Oh well, to each his own, have fun.

I recall seeing something called a Turner belt/strap/harness that is basically just a strap that goes around the seat back and your upper body and is used by autocrossers who are looking to keep their upper body stable. It's nothing I would use for anything but an autocross, but I have seen them used there so I presume they are legal at least for that.

I used to use the stock seat belt tensioning system as was described by white777 in my NX2000 and some other cars, but it felt awkward in the Evo, so I sprang for a harness...

Corbeau makes a racing harness for $80-110 depending on which features you want on it. http://www.soloracer.com/corbeaubelts.html Schroth costs a little more because they got their belts DOT approved, while Corbeau belts are really only recommended for the track.

Nothere, the retractable harness can be released and tucked out of the way in seconds. I can fit 4 people comfprtably in my car any time I want to, and if I had mounted the back belt behind the rear seats instead of on them, I could fit 5 people in my car just as easily. Your wife should have no problems with a 5 seater being able to seat 5 people after adding even more safety devices to it.

They are removeable, but that requires a socket wrench and about 5-10 minutes per seat. I have them mounted along with the stock belt, so I just tuck them next to the seat when I'm not using them. Nobody even realizes they're there unless I point them out.

For inexpensive but high-quality racing harnesses, you need to turn to circle track racing sources. They prefer latch-and-link systems (as opposed to cam-lock) because they're more resistant to dirt and grime. As a bonus, the prices are lower.

Check out Racer Wholesale and Ultra Shield for starters. Both sell complete 3" 5-point harness systems for $60-70 bucks. Or, you can go with a nice cam-lock for around $110.

Yup. Again, you can find them at circle track racing places, like Racer Wholesale. There's an example here for only $15. Much safer to have the quick-release Fastex buckle rather than Velcro.
