Harness Questions.. Schroth??

I am looking to get some 4 pt harnesses now that AutoX is getting into full swing. Does anyone have experince with Schroth equipment:
Schroth Harness

With no roll bar/cage, I need to get a bolt in harness as opposed to the wrap flavor, and was hoping for some feedback.

Thanks.

I have the Ralleye 3 model and use the upper LATCH anchor to attach the shoulder belts. Works fine, but I don't have much to compare it to...

I have quite a bit of experience with harnesses seeing as both my cars have them installed. I have a Sparco 3 Point harness installed in my 99 Z24 and it's been in there for about 3 years now and I had a Sparco 3 Point Harness Installed in my 03 Lancer OZ last summer.

Where to begin hmmmm.

1) Ok first of all I don't know much about Schroth, but looking at the price I can tell you that Sparco 3 or even 4 points would be in the same range. So maybe price out some sparcos.

2) They limit your movement in the car, so changing the stereo becomes harder. Just know that.

3) They hold you REALLY well in hard stops and laterally. With the Recaro's you'll be planted. Go outside, sit in your car and get right into the pocket. That's how driving with 3 points will feel if you want them to be effective and safe.

4) Girlfriends hate them. If this car is supposed to be practical then you might want to reconsider it.

5) The 3 points will easily bolt up to the stock seatbelt bolts in the back seat of your car. This is where you wanna bolt them. Just remember, riding in the middle of the back seat becomes almost impossible and riding in the back seat on the door sides become uncomfortable. Sparco however offers a clip latch that can be secured to the bottom of the seat. You might want to look into this if you want to retain the usage of your back seat.

Other than that have fun. P.S. I really don't see a need for 4 point harnesses for AutoX, 3 Points are just as effective and cheaper.

I have the rallye-4, e-bayed from a BMW owner a couple of years ago (2000?). It worked in my 2000 Celica GT-S great and so I carried it over.

First, the plant IS awesome, no doubt. Second, it uses a backseat loop, bolted in, with a latch connector that Ys to the straps that go thru the slots in our recaros. For someone sitting behind the driver they can just shove the latch out from under their butt when they ride.

For daily use I have the harness folded back and use the seatbelts - no issue!

You might talk to the mfrs about their recommendations for exact fitment of flanges, etc. There seemed to be a ridge here or there that didn't make much sense as I bolted things up but would probably have a better design if a model was actually designed more to the Evos bolts, etc.

Good luck and let us know what you decide upon!

I would be installing these in additon to the normal belts, and using them only for AutoX.

The 4 pt's are not that much more expensive, but I am still considering which system to go with.

The Schroth's also have a disconnect for the shoulder hanreses ss that you can unhook from the back mount system, and stow the shoulder harnesses when not racing (to avoid annoying the wife). That way for normal driving I can still use the stock belts. I just want something to hook me in when running AutoX.

Thanks for the feedback Blings. I will post up when I decide and have pictures.

Thanks Kazz,
I think that the 4 point is the way for me to go, since I can disconnect like you said. AS far as the back, as long as my sons child seat can still be hooked into the center location it is now, I do not think there will be any issues (child seats make people not take you seriously, so I leave it in when I run. )

Did you have any problems bolting both the harness and stock belts to the lap belt mounting points.?

Like Blings said, you might want to look into other brands as well. The big thing about Schroth is that they are DOT approved and have the patented ASD (anti-submarine device or something like that), but you don't need that if you're only using the belts for autocross. If you want to drive around town with them on, that's different. I raced on a borrowed Schroth Rallye 3 harness for a few months before buying a Corbeau 3 point releasable. Both work great and can be unclipped and pushed out of the way for fitting people in the back seats and driving around town.

Here's some pics. First two are of the Corbeau 3 point, and the last is of the Schroth 3 point. Same diff.

Definitely check other vendors... the hardest part was the install at the bolt on the console side of the driver. Decent socket and open/closed-end wrench will get it done, just take your time.

I had the benefit of having installed it in my prior car.

Oh, and my kids' seat stays in place behind the driver - except during events... *laugh*

I am going to guess that's a difficult part on any brand. I actually ended up floor mounting my inside one to allow me to tighten the seatbelt around my skinny @$$ 32" waist. One more thing I forgot to mention, if you plan on doing track events, you actually might want to go ahead with the Schroth or get a competition grade 3" harness, as many other ones are not recommended for track. Autocross allows just about anything (they would probably even allow that velcro idea ) but road course events may or may not allow my harness. I might end up wearing both the Corbeau and stock belts at my next track event.

Ummm not quite. Harnesses only have the latch on the right side. Which means the passenger would have to use the harness all the time. You removed the stock seatbelt latch which would be on the left side.

Blings, I have mine installed without removing any of the factory belts. I just unclip the rear portion and tuck the lab belts under the seats and bingo, nobody knows they're there.
