Stinky smoke while decelerating?

Since we installed the surge tank, I'm getting stinky smoke on decel after doing a WOT run. I also changed test pipes (to a used AMS test pipe). I also swapped the plugs. The old ones looked fine. I've not pulled the new plugs to look at it.

I'm not sure if it's just the added fuel pressure making it dump more fuel in or if there's something scarier going on.

The logs look fine, it's a little rich and it's pulling decently.

I emptied my catch cans last night, they had some stuff in them, but weren't full.

Here's a video (still processing, but will be in higher res once done)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1Qk3UtOs3Q

See 0:13 and 0:55 or so (the first is early in my drive this morning, the 2nd is near work).

Does't look dark enough to be fuel or oil, but its tough to say from a video. An easy way to rule out excess fuel on decel would be to watch your IDC's to see if they drop to 0% while its still smoking. Are your wideband AFR's pegging to 22:1 (or whatever your sensor max is) on decel?

ya, wideband is pegged when deceling, but it looks like it takes a couple seconds for it to happen (note the TPS -> AFR taking a couple seconds to go full lean). And yes, fuel trims are jacked way the hell up.

Injectors generally won't shut off right away, it seems to be once RPM's drop below a certain level at least from what I've noticed on 8/9's. Your AFR's shortly after you got off the throttle (6k down to 5k RPM range) do still look fairly rich though so maybe it is fuel. Have someone follow you and smell it

Don't need to be behind me to smell it. Smells like **** on a stick . It could be the smell of E85 being rich... it could be oil. I don't think it's coolant (but I guess it could be). My overflow tank looks good, the oil needs changed, but it's not frothy or milky (on the dipstick and the fill cap).

+1 Kracka..in the X's, once you let off the throttle the TPS doesn't come down quickly probably because of the electronic throttle..i do smell it every once in awhile..and yes you're right there Sean your oil might be getting bad now..

Oh I forgot you're on E85! That could be why the fuel smoke is white instead of the gray/black I was expecting. How big is that new fuel pump of yours? Do you have an aftermarket FPR?

See now we're getting closer to what I'm thinking...

I was DW 1000 cc injectors with a walbro 255 in the tank. On this setup my fuel trims were like ~1% or less (both idle and cruise)

Now I've got the same injectors and the 255 in the tank feeding a surge tank which then is fed through another 255 into the fuel rail. The guy I bought the kit from says that it will affect your idle fuel trims due to the increased fuel pressure.

Maybe what's happening is while the injectors are still open from the WOT (and the ECU is hanging the throttle) it's just DUMPING fuel into the cylinder making the gnarly smell and smoke. Once I get back onto the throttle (and start the sparkplugs again) it's actually burning the fuel.

I've been wondering if a fuel pressure regulator is something I need to be looking at. What's the benefit of one? Does it go before the fuel rail or after the rail?

An aftermarket AFPR goes after the fuel rail and replaces the stock FPR. It will help return excess fuel to the fuel tank, its possible your stock one is being over-run.

I wonder if it would in any way be beneficial to put the stock pump back in the tank? My only concern is you'd run out of fuel on the long WOT stretches.

No, the 2nd pump runs all the time. The theory is that the in tank pump isn't really supposed to have that much load on it. Normally with the surge tank you'd just leave the stock pump in there, but since a) I already had the 255 in there and b) I'm on E85 that can't happen...

Since its an inline pump I'm guessing it always needs to stay on, but lowering the voltage the pumps see during idle/cruise conditions would be very beneficial.

The surge tank in theory has enough fuel for 15 seconds of not being fed from the main tank which is more than enough unless I'm doing donuts (lol).

I'm thinking that the combination of my cruise fuel trim being so negative and excess fuel rail pressure is forcing a ton of fuel into the engine when decelling.

hey sean, if it is excess fuel..i'm not sure if you came across clipse3gt's thread on getting a slight clog on the return line filter..i saw that somewhere..
