My co-workers lives on 5 acres in weatherford and has 3 ponds on his property with plenty of frogs to feed these snakes.

Snakes are good to have around (well, not water mocosan's). They eat field mice, rats, rotents and other vermin and keep your property clean. Rodents carry fleas and disease in the wild which can infect your pets, and they started that black plague thingy. My father and grandfather would kick my *** if I ever shot or scared a snake off the farm (unless it's a water mocosan).

I changed your statement to the way it probably really happened.

My coworker and I did not kill the snake, as soon as we heard it hiss and puff up we were out of there... and I beat him back to the car

True but.. Puff adder is the common name of several snake species:

-Bitis arietans, a venomous snake species found in Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula
-Bitis, any other member of this genus
-Heterodon, a genus of harmless North American colubrid snakes

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puff_adder

Heterodon platirhinos

Touche, my good sir. Wikipedia = truth.
I hate when common names get mixed so much like that, if somebody told me I had a puff adder in my swimming pool, that would be rather alarming.

i could be wrong by i thought hognosed snakes were rear fanged and mildly venomous, comparable to a bee sting to people if they where actually able to get you finger deep enough into their mouths to get rear fangs into you

they are good pet snakes. i had one when I was young

That's what I've heard and read. Though I used to keep one and it never bit me or even tried to. I'm figuring it must not be a protective weapon but maybe more for the sole pupose of holding and subduing small prey.
