Stupid question

Okay, this is a stupid question you can just file in the 'noob' category but...

How does one actually go about getting new rims put on their car? (I know how someone puts rims on their car, but stay with me a moment.)

I see some cool rims I like on one of the sites. To my knowledge, this site doesn't have a shop I can just drive up to and have them mounted, balanced, etc. So...what, do I order the rims from the site, have them shipped to me and then drive them to a shop myself? Do I order them through a shop and go have them put on when they come in.

Is there a shop that can order the ones I want from the site I found and then install them for me?

Stupid question, I know. I'm a noob, sue me.

i can get you excellent deals on enkei wheels, and can also get anything you see on tire racks webpage. also, i can get you tires as well, and mount and balance them for you, as well as put them on the car.

simple as that

You just heard it from KevinD himself. I just got tires from him mounted on Newb Modding day and no issues. Kevin placed the order for me through TireRack and shipped them straight to the shop. He and I just set up a date to get them done and that was that.

*edit: Also, you won't find tire mounting any cheaper AND with the care to make sure the wheels don't get scratched.

To throw in my 2 cents.. I ordered wheels from a .com shop. When they show up, I plan to head down to a local tire place to have my tires swapped from the stock wheels and then mounted and balanced.

If you purchase new wheels AND tires, most places (like Evo D mentioned) can mount and balance them for you and provide a bolt-on product.

Keep in mind you will likely need hub rings and new lug nuts as well.

Good point with the lug nuts. I do see people using stock lug nuts on aftermarket wheels, and beveled lug nuts on stock wheels. Both can cause problems. Make sure if you wheel is lug centric to use beveled lugs. If it's hub centric, get the rings if required.

Any wheels ordered through TireRack will include the proper lugnuts and hubcentric rings.

And yet they are called both by a variety of people.

In reply to the rest: Thanks for the tips. Looks like it'll be easier than I though to get my new 'rims' put on. Thanks.

I gotta agree with Lancerguy, the rim is a portion of the wheel.

Perhaps. But as most things in the English language, things can have more than one meaning. In a country where "LOL" can actually be added to a dictionary, cars can ride on "rims."

Honestly, I think there are more important things to worry about in this country than a person's choice of words.

There is nothing wrong with being corrected/educated. In a world full of slang you're obviously free to speak as you wish.

don't wheels and tires that come Tire Rack come mounted AT Tire Rack for no additional charge?

its actually a better deal when you buy on Tire Rack, you pay shipping regardless, but no tax.

they can come mounted, but for the guys with TPMS, you either have to buy new sensors, or live without them and the light on in your dash.

and for reference, i can get enkeis, with tax,and mount and balance them still for less then tire rack plus you'll have your TPMS sensors mounted, unless your going for second set of wheels as a spare.

i don't charge shipping on anything, i build it into my prices (unless i'm shipping it to you, in which case, yes, ordering from tire rack could be cheaper, but i would have to check.)
