Lug Key Round 2!!!!

So I was lucky to find a spline lug key for my other lugs, and now I have somehow misplaced my key for the stock lug nuts I use on my stock autox wheels. I think I left it at Mineral Wells for the Street Tire Challenge. I'm having a streak of bad luck.

I'm not in a big hurry since I have races the next two weekends so I don't need to take the wheels off anytime soon. I was planning on pulling them today to repaint them black so the wife wouldn't mind rolling around in it when I'm too lazy to pull the track wheels. It's kind of nice taking the Galant to work.

Anyway, anyone happen to have as stock lug key laying around I could buy.

They aren't all the same. Go to the dealer, they should have a master set and be able to sell you one. I think Mitsu's master set is 12 different lug keys.

Dude... get rid of the locking stock lugs. The insert comes out and then you're mega-f-ed. Unfortunately I found out the hard way, but was able to hammer it back in one more time to get the lugs back off.

Someone on here will have 4 stock lugs for you (8/9/X lugs are the same).

I've had sets on my DSM's, IX, and X...no issues.

Were you removing them weekly for track events? I was... they simply wear out and then you're boned.

I've never heard of anyone elses failing. One bad set doesn't mean they're all junk. Just my 2-cents. I never swapped wheels weekly, but with frequent tire rotations and swapping winter/summer wheels they still got plenty of use. Did you properly torque (i.e. not over-torque) yours? Ever use an impact on them?

After the car stereo place moved my lugnut key and I had to get my track tires mounted out at the track instead of by Laramie, I took them off, and haven't looked back.

this is a worse case scenario but if you want them off..... find a deep-well impact socket that barely fits over the lock and tap it on with a hammer, then use a impact gun.

Yes and yes. Mine was not the first set to break. McGuard lugs are used by lots of people and they do have a failure rate (not sure how high). I didn't break the internal splines that hold the insert with the special pattern on it, the insert just came out.

They have no place on a race car. PERIOD

Sean is correct about McGuards failing especially if they are removed/installed a lot however taking your wheels off a few times a year will not.
