Howdy!
Hey Guys,
Just wanted to introduce myself. I put down a deposit on an 03 TB this weekend and will be picking it up sometime in September. I've been wanting an EVO since they came out back when I had my Talon. Things are finally working out and I couldn't be more excited.
I bought the car with a blown block. The owner provided me with a good, low mileage stock block. I picked up the block and head while I was at his place this weekend and will be assembling them shortly.
Hopefully I can come to a meet after I get her together. I'm going to need a stock turbo system to finish things up. I may be hitting some of you guys up for that (manifold back and stock intercooler/intake.
Anyway, hi!
Brady

Thanks!
Yeah, I always feel cheated if anyone installs stuff on my car. When I was at A&M I had the swaybars installed on my Talon. It hurt to watch. Then I had a clutch installed... that was the end of it. Aside from welding, I do everything. And I plan to learn to weld when I get a chance.
Thanks for the tip! If I can't find the stuff cheap in classifieds I'll give them a call.

Small update. I was finally able to get the shortblock up on my stand. Being a super-budget build, I found a pretty heavy duty stand on Craigslist for $30. Paint is rough, but I don't really care.

It was nice to finally be able to spin the crank. Motor spins well. Cylinders are nice and smooth.
Just to share my plans with the car, I'm really excited to get it up and running almost totally stock. I've always been really quick to modify my cars without really having fun driving them along the way. With a few exceptions, this car will be pretty close to stock. I'll go ahead and take the opportunity to do ARP head studs while the motor is split. I'll also probably install adjustable cam gears so I won't have to deal with that later. Ill also probably do an AMS race BSE kit. Other than that, stock motor, stock turbo, etc.
Speaking of stock parts. I'm going to need a few.
Stock intercooler and piping
Stock exhaust manifold
Stock turbo (VIII)
Stock downpipe
Stock cat
Stock exhaust
Stock ignition system
Stock intake
Stock springs
Currently I don't have cash for these (simply because everything is going to purchase the car), but I will in September.
The only thing I have to trade right now is 3 Precision 1000cc injectors. I actually have 4, but one failed and took out #2 on the old motor. Let me know if you're interested in 3 for spares or whatever!

Glad to hear that you want to have some fun with a mostly stock car. That is what I do and I love it!
If you are on a budget (and even if you weren't), get rid of the adjustable cam gears. They provide ricer mythical horsepower gains. Haha. They don't actually provide any benefit to power, they just look nice (not in my opinion). Most of the time, people install them because the internets told them to, but then the bolts aren't tight or they spin and destroy your motor. I have seen multiple people need new valves because they wanted colorful cam gears.

Thanks for the advice! My thoughts were that if I moved up to bigger cams one day I'd be able to get some power from tweaking them, not for the stock cams.
They definitely aren't a must, and it's quite a budget build for now.

I was told that I needed them a long time ago. I guess that it should have been common sense, but I ended up using a ratchet instead of a wrench and when the cams passed over that mid point, they ran away from me until they kissed the valves in cylinder 4.

Not worth it...

So, I got bored and decided to go out and play with the block today.
The rear balance shaft was still in the motor for some reason. I found out that it is seemingly because the bearings are in bad shape. I'll be doing a BSE kit on the car anyway, so I decided to go ahead and pull it out. I found a random bolt that fit the threads, put an impact socket around it, and improvised a slide hammer. Came out in about 10 hits.
At this point, I decided I would be stupid to not replace the bearings while I have the opportunity. (I can see how builds get very expensive very quickly with this mentality). So, I went ahead and pulled the girdle and rod caps... simply because I had some time to kill.
So, just a couple questions.
1. Nevermind on this, I figured out how to get them out....
2. Does anyone have a good condition front balance shaft they'd be willing to donate? I want to use the AMS kit and I don't have a core. I'll be happy to trade a 6 pack of Shiner for one.
