ice racing anyone?

just curious if anyone does this? i'm planning on going for at least 1 weekend with some mazda people. the boston bmw-cca and the sports car club of vermont run them, one in NH and one in VT. it's basically an autox on a frozen lake from what i understand (i've never been before). there's another one in upstate NY but that's more of a road course setup so other people are on the track at the same time and i don't trust myself enough to do that.

bmw-cca: http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/events/...px?EventID=245
sccvt: http://forums.sccv.org/viewtopic.php?t=765

we should get some more evos out there

Any good winter tire should work fine. Naturally studded tires are the best, but anything like a Blizzak, etc will do fine. I think I am going to try the Hankook w404s winter tire this season..

I've run the BMW CCA--Boston Chapter events in NH. Like you said, it's basically an auto-x on a frozen lake. Like any other auto-x, it involves lots of standing around and waiting for precious little track time. For track junkies like myself, that gets a bit frustrating. I prefer winter lapping days at venues like Mecaglisse, which we run with the BMW Club of Quebec. Not only do you get hours of track time, but you run on packed snow rather than sheer ice.

As for tires, the BMW events have classes for winter tires, studded tires, and screw tires. I've run these events with winter tires on my 325ix and Evo. Even with AWD, there's SO little grip that it gets really frustrating. Studded tires would be much more fun.

I may check this one out, hadn't heard of it before this. I help out with NER SCCA and always look for fun things in winter besides the carting!!

Yes, I plan on going tomorrow and have emailed in a registration today. I've got just one problem: I can't find directions to the site. Anyone got an address so I can mapquest it? What parking lot are they using?

Thanks,

Found them!

I had to look at their summer autocross section because this is the same lot they use in the summer, hence the no studs policy.

The directions are here.

Yahoo maps directions here

Note: They require Snell 2000 or better helmets. No 15 year old Snell 95's.

Hello Alex,

I'm sorry to inform you that A.M.E.C. has decided to cancel it's Studs on Ice event this year. I have sent an email out to the list explaining more about it. Come on out and run in our Street Legal class. It's more fun for the same money and you can do it much more than just once a year.

Regards,

Mike
