It depends dave, like I said that was just my experience, and that was at a summit at, I think it was either waterville or sunday river, I forget which....but chances are since you and Kate are just starting out, you may not see summits, or summit temps at any point soon...they are more convenient I'll admit...but for me I just like the strap in......it's all preference..
