hmm, not looking forward to tomorrow's weather. Work policy says no telecommuting due to inclement weather either!

the entire jefferson medical system is bull****. we get these emails saying "there is a weather emergency and all staff is required to report to their assigned postions," all the time.
now i just got an email with the subject:

"Potential Weather Emergency - Request for Four Wheel Drive Vehicles"

with a message saying

"Jefferson Hospitals are preparing for a forecasted significant snowstorm
Tuesday, February 9 into Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Jefferson
employees who have a four wheel drive vehicle and would like to volunteer
to transport staff from the tri-state area to Jefferson and back are
encouraged to sign up via a new Employee Self Service page. Please
provide a valid drivers license and current insurance card."

Because 4 wheel drive vehicles are the fix-all when it comes to weather emergency. Let's not take into account proper equipment and driver skill.

My wife is getting a awd car but she'll crash that just the same as she would her current fwd car.

I hate misinformation and the false belief that awd cars are immune to bad conditions. It's the reason why you see total a-holes blasting down a snowy street in their expedition.

totally retarded. so they want you to put you, your car and other people at risk. there should be some incentive like the hospital's insurance will cover you. if you crash doing this then you're stuck with the bill and loss in value of your car.

Why don't they just get some hotel rooms in the city for people if they need them to come in during the storm?

If they cover insurance, I will smash mine into yours, and we both get new cars?

would you take your work up on that? just wondering. i'd be a bit annoyed if that were suggested to me. it is like "we don't give a s**** about you or your family, you're only as good as your billing sheet so to ensure that we have a billing sheet tomorrow we'll invest in a 50 dollar roach motel room so your a$$ can be here bright, snowy and early."

My plant is going to be closed tomorrow. They just came to that decision, probably a good one considering we only had 12 union members saying they would come in.

Dan, what kind of car is your wife getting?

Who wants to meet at DR tonight for some ?

Dan, you really need to sign up for this! I want to see the look on people's faces when your car shows up to transport them. Oh, take photo's too.

yeeah it sucks. My work stays open all the time, even when DE is in a state of emergency. its a combination that the owner is a complete **** face and its in the city of Wilmington. I guess they figure people can still walk to the bar. its just annoying because it drags the employees down. Some of the people that work there live in the city, but a majority of us are quite some time away. its just sucks because now i have to risk my **** to get in there only to stand around and do nothing. And yes, they do get hotel rooms for people that are unable to make it home.

I can telecommute, but other people cannot. Typically they ask for people to volunteer for a skeleton crew for jobs that require people to come in. Those folks usually get more pay or some sort of compensation for staying close in a hotel. The rest are allowed to telecommute or not come in depending on their job. So it is more of volunteer thing from the pool of people on the different teams to stay close in a hotel but it beats having to drive in. Lowers the risk to the employer and employee, a little give-and-take with the employees and the business can still function with marginally the same cost. The thing is I don't know if people are given the day off at company cost or they have to take it from their own time. Now, that's the part that can suck because if it is without pay, you can have people risking their lives to come in, or pissed that they have to write it off because only so many volunteers are needed.
