IMO, learning a new track is not harder than learning how to get around an autox course you've only just seen that morning. its actually easier than that because you have a defined layout that never changes AND you get to run it lap after lap after lap. All you really need to know is what's coming up next.
There is no right or wrong course to do for your first time, just get out there and do it. My first ever event was Shenandoah, Pete's was Monticello. both tracks could be considered two of the most challanging on the east coast depending on who you talk to. I doubt learning on those track has hindered either of our development at all... in fact it probably helped because anything after that seems simple.

I;ve had bad experiences with both PCA and BMWCCA. They are still two of the top clubs to run with though.
come to think of it I've had bad experiences with every club I've run with (trackdaze, nasa/pda, bmwcca, pca, SCCA). that won't deter my from running with any of them even though i have my favs. I guess its just the roll of the dice. There are good and bad people in every club, just that you interact with some of them more than others.

My instructor wasnt' that great for my first track day. But he kept me save, and made sure I could handle my car. My first was at Lightning, with NASA, on a wet weekend. I would not judge a club by a single instructor though...
any of you guys going to the biggest hardparking...cough i mean...meet of the year: import alliance down in b-more? Im supposed to be outta town but a bunch of friends are trying to drag me along..
