Keep stepping on the brake and let ABS do its work, or don't slide in the first place.

Michelin Pilot Alpin 2's are the best winter tyre by far in terms of excellent all-round snow, wet and dry performance, *if* you are mounting to the stock wheel. I think Dunlop Winter Sport M3 make a better tyre, but they don't fit on stock rims.

The Blizzaks are excellent in snow, but don't perform as well in the dry.

Yeah Blizzak ws-50's are the popular choice by far.

They are amazing tires, look around; you can find pictures of Evo's in the snow with max body roll on these tires. Think how much traction it takes to completely preload your suspension on one side... In the snow... Amazing.

Awesome input everybody thanks! The only thing I have immediately available up hereare a set of ZEX's with sips cut in them for $622 total. Another local company can get a set of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi's in but it will be a couple of days oh and $250 a pop. Was also looking at the Dunlop Winter Sport M3's or Sport 3D's. Good to know that they don't mount on the stock rim. (Thanks ksattic) I may cough up the bones for the RSi's though, Developed in Finland? Think they know a thing or two about winter driving?

Along the lines of what eve-slow mentioned should I go with a skinny(er) tire? or stick with tthe 235s?

+1

It doesn't snow very much by me either but I was driving on ice last night and they seemed fine. I also got them siped at Les Schwab for like $13 a tire.

The tires did fine on the ice, I actually didn't even know the ground was icy until I got out of my car and about fell on my ***!

Yeah with ABS you dont want to let off the brake. Dont pump ABS.
My evo did good in the snow yesterday on my way to Seaside.

I had my Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS's put on this morning and they are wonderful. ~$925 from Discount Tire Co. Much smoother ride and much much quieter. Now all I have to do is get rid of the rattle my catalytic converter is causing and I would actually have a semi-quiet Evo

And I am (FYI) still on the stock advans.
Today I drove into work going about 5mph and the fricking ABS turns on. I am not really very happy with it.

FYI I took the ABS fuse out tonight...

Probably take the Talon tomorrow...

Well should have bought any set of tires with sips while I could The evo is parked out-front the house until the snow/ice melts. Sigh..... That for the input guys will be definitely be buying a set before I head into the mountains or this continues and I have to get it towed and then tires on. Thanks again for all of the input.

Aloha,
Ian

Glad I am not the only one. I had problems with my ABS last year.

the Conti Extreme contact is nice in snow, it will still let you play a bit as its not liek a blizzak, but it still lets you feel comfortable in snow.

good inexpensive choice in tires.

I would recommend strongly on the Blizzak LM series. I had the LM-22's back in 03 when the evos were brand new. that winter we had ice storms. i was driving home on them and i thought the ground looked funny so i opened my door and it ground was iced over and i didnt even notice. not bad on ice for not having studs and you can still do cookies in the snow all day long with out messing them up too bad. Oh yea... get them from tire rack cuz i checked the prices when i bought mine... $800 @ Tire rack and $1200 @ Les schwab

Will most likely be sliding on down to Les Schwab tomorrow for a set of mud/snow tires any recommendations? I did do a couple of searches just wanted to know what the local guys are running.

Drive safe guys it's crappy out there. Almost 6" of snow at my house as of typing.

Aloha,
Ian

P.S. - I really, really, really like open parking lots! I have just discovered them and I am grinning again just thinking about it.
I went over the mountians this weekend in the Evo sporting Avants. Definately don't hold the pulsing pedal. Backing off the ABS seemed to make a huge difference in getting stopped in 6" of snow. I got some good camera phone pics of the rear spoiler catching downforce even @ 40 MPH.
