novice driver school

http://www.nwalfaclub.com/track/calendar.php

really good way to learn your car in a very safe atmosphere. bad weather is good because you can have fun on the skid pad.
girls and teenagers get a discount.
drive any old beater or your track car.

threshold braking aka emergency stop among other important aspects.

class is: some common sense class and driving exercises. maybe an xcross I don't remember.

more or less an introduction to good or performance driving.
if nothing else a good class for updating your bad habits into good ones.

+1 for the alfa club. They are a great club and very friendly to non-alfa owners in my experience. This can not be said for some other clubs. Lets just say I don't like the Porsche Club.

car doesn't need to be perfect. The year I did it someone rented a vw bug and used it. Its all fun, maybe more fun in a car that isn't a serious contender.

the idea is you gain something if you never do another driving event, or it is a comfortable first step if you are interested in performance driving.

btw most car clubs will not allow you at PR unless you have done some training like this.

+1, Alfa club does a great job. Their Pacific Raceway lapping days have by far the most varied assortment of cars; Enzo showed up a few years ago, converted stock car last year, Porsches, Ferraris, BMWs, Vettes, Nissans, Hondas, Mazdas, a few Evos, to many others to mention, and even some Alfas! Even if you don't plan to do any PR events, the Novice school is very useful and a good bang for the $.

I was ready to punch the trigger on the ohlins... then convinced myself to put that cash away for a new house in the fall. Looks like I will be racing stock again this year

I would recommend running one season on the stock suspension. Your improvements in drivers skill for that first year will easily beat the time you would shave in suspension mods. Throw on a set of RE-01s and dominate Novice class!

Come on they all are good schools! You just got to check the attitude, & be open to learning.

IMHO, there is nothing worse then someone who owns a 300hp+ car & can't drive it smoothly!

I'm taking the GF to her first ground school this weekend, with "gasp" the PCA in the EVO.

If you want real fun, free track time, the Alfa club is the way to go, they run the loosest schools around, & have a ton of seat time.

^^^^ Well, seeing that you have a C4S and that you are running with the PCA means that you ARE a member of the PCA since they WONT let you go unless you are a member (which means owning a Porsche).

One more think then I'll get off my soap box... its not the "other people" that need to check their attitude at the door. It is the Porsche guys that need to. Don't get me wrong, some of them are great, but I think a lot of people know what I'm talking about.

But I'm glad to see an Evo guy out there tearing it up with PCA, I'm sure your GF will have a blast.

LOL, I have owned the 911 for less then 2 months, so I'm pretty new to the PCA. However, I purchased a 1991 BMW M3 when I was 20 yo, back in 1995 & joined the BMWCCA. I had the quite common attitude that I knew how to drive fast, & these old guys didn't know anything. So I went through the ground school not learning a lot, then did 2 years of Auto-X. I would spin out quite a bit & got very frustrated, then I had a one of the 911 owners go out with me & tried to tech me. Then I started to learn, & I won the Novice class, then went on to win the state class the next year. it wasn't until I did a few full course TT's & DE that I stopped with the Auto-X, for a ton of track time!

I know all about it, I was there, the EVO is the E30 M3 of the new age, it just has a TON more power & handles better, so it's even easier to screw up. My point is, you need to go in with the mentality that you do NOT know what you are doing & be open to learning.

If you are part of the BMWCCA, NWALFA, or PCA you can attend, I believe they also let other smaller clubs go out, like BSCC.

IMHO, the BSCC & BMWCCA do a great ground school! As long as your car is safe, it's fine to run, you DO NOT need 1000whp to go out! Actually it's even better when you beat a very high HP& high $$ car with a little car!

Yea man you dont need all that if you haven't tracked yet. It may be fun on the street but it can be a handful on the track. Stockish evo is still very very capaple. I remember when I went to some events with my old probe that stock evos where still cleaning up except for modded vettes. Stock suspension, maybe some decent pads and good tires would do wonders. Having KW's and 350whp and everything isn't going to make you a better driver. IMO once you add those things though after tracking you will be able tell wheres the differences are. I guess I can't say much since I haven't even tracked my evo and I already been eyeballing ohlins I'm such a hipocrite
