Lookin for new job field?
does the navy know what warfare even is(besides your infantry)??? i mean...."A-Hoey Matey, I think I see me a ship out on the horizon...." sweet, we just earned our warfare pins?? Now an honest question... What country other than N Korea has ships that we dont get along with? and dont say the pirates off the coast of africa!....they are in canoes!

Now I'm no expert on Naval tactics, but isn't Iran severely limited by it's ports? Close off the Persian Gulf and they have no way of even getting to the open seas. I sure as hell hope our 5 aircraft carriers and supporting fleets can keep 1 destroyer in port. The Japanese did it in WWII with devistating results. (Pearl Harbor?)

We are way off topic!

no problem keeping the Destroyer in port, however it can still launch all of its weapons, even it is in dry dock. WWII ships and today ships are night and day. Iran knows she is vulnerable so there is a huge weapons build up to cover the entire gulf and part of the Arabian sea. They have a decent layerd defense and I don't usually say that about countries. Sure we have things we can do that obviously I can't talk about on here but Iran is NOT a country that should be pushed to the side.

Somewhat true statement... First off the Somali Pirates are in dows not canoes, second off we are not on best for terms with China or Russia. But more so we are more worried about the IRGC and IRGCN with Iran. If you do some research you will find that they just commissioned a Destroyer, first in their fleet with great capabilities and at the commissioning Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stated "The devil has a present for you America, there will be no mercy nor warning"... Iran is prob the most dangerous Navy asset at this point because of our presence in the gulf. They practice advance swarm tactics and other asymmetrical warfare tactics that no other countries does. It is hard to train against these tactics and defend a strike group. However CWIS Block 4 and SPY1 is all I'm going to say. Now you do the research and tell me how those systems aid to protect us

Navy Budget = 800 billion
Iran Budget = 5 million
we are in trouble if they scare you.....only thing they do well is bleed....

but in all seriousness I know nothing about how the navy operates tactically, other than we got some big A$$ ships and will do work on other ships if need be. The navy is neat in the way you are completely self organic....you have ships for the water, aircraft and a ground fighting force in the jarheads. I jumped onto Fallon Naval Air Station back in december '07 and it was a colllllld night!

than underestimating your enemy.
Underestimating your enemy
means losing your greatest assets.
Lao Tzu...
the British though that Americans were just a bunch of farmers with hunting muskets too...Considering how much oil America imports from the middle east, simply blocking in the Iranian navy would not be a viable option. Nuclear war is war that no one wins. Before some smart *** says"oh yeah how well did it work on Japan", let me point out that at the time we were the only ones that had the capability. A gun will always win against someone with a stick, but if both have guns who wins? Also noteworthy is that war has historically been an army against army endeavor with the populous supporting the military. In a nuclear war, the common people and infrastructure are the primary targets instead of the typical military targets.
Sorry OP for going off topic..
Totally agree and see everyones point of view! I have to say I agree mostly with spdngdragon. Just because Iran is small doesn't' mean they can not pack and punch and by studying their military for the past few years I can tell you that they certainly can, and shouldn't be underestimated!

i appreciate everyones personal exprience towards any service or job. But are there any guys that serve in any military service thats married? I'd like to hear their side of things
Ya I'm engaged but pretty much married! What are you wanting to know? It is hard, if that is what you are wondering. It is not as bad as a lot of people think. It just takes some work from both of you. She has to understand that you will be gone but you will always come home to her. However, she will love the steady pay checks and the free Medical and Dental.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
