45k a year = ~19.50 to 20.50 an hour, which by most standards is almost impossible to live off of without help. In the military it is possible, and quite good money considering you don't really have to pay much in the way living expense bills.
Ya I'm engaged but pretty much married! What are you wanting to know? It is hard, if that is what you are wondering. It is not as bad as a lot of people think. It just takes some work from both of you. She has to understand that you will be gone but you will always come home to her. However, she will love the steady pay checks and the free Medical and Dental.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Well my advice would be to research what industries are booming or are going to be in need 3-5yrs down the road. I did this a few years back when I started in the Automation industry. Got my mechanical design AS and 4-5 yrs work experience and now a supervisor at mid 20's.
I have SME's from the Navy that were E7's and Chiefs that work under me...which is a tad odd being that some of them are twice my age. Hard work, dedication, and willing to give up some things will get you a long way now a days. Look in the right spot and there are alot of places that can make well over 50k a year...I was lucky enough to find one of them.
One other alternative over here in Kitsap is the shipyard. Do an apprentice program and start out at $18hr and within the first year you are $22-23hr. After you finish your BA (which is paid for) you are over $30hr within a few years. Just do your research and get help writing a solid resume and know how to talk well about your experiences and employers will look at this.
I won't say a whole lot about the Navy or Military but I would suggest researching this possibility alot. Have an idea where you would want to go once in and make sure this is what you would want. Because once you sign a large portion of your time is dedicated towards this. Most turn out to love it but I know a few who have regrets. I chose the civilian route being the black sheep of my family for the most part and have no regrets.
