Dismal fuel economy

But, my intent was Only to see why the manu. spec'ed oil weight was not used...
Now, I know.
0W-30 & 0W-40 are available in my part of town. Granted I haven't see any 0W-20s on the shelves, but that's probably because I never bother to look.
Our OS is a 2012, and the filler cap doesn't have a recommended oil weight on it, so I assumed 5w30, my bad, and its what I ran in my turbo 4B11. The oil change is recent, the terrible fuel economy is not. I've had close to 20 cars counting the wife mobiles, and this is the first one I'm aware of that runs 0w20.
I'd still be interested in a manual calculation from you noize. Just fill up. Drive normal. Fill up again. Take the amount it took and apply. (Miles driven/gallons filled). Just make sure to fill up on congruent days. Temp expands / contracts petro
I am now getting 11-12 L/100km in Canadian cold winter. In summer I got around 10L/100km, on the highway 9L/100km no matter what condition. 2wd 4wd or lock doesn't get a big different on my car. I am actually not very happy on this!
One thing my wife and I were talking about on a long way home today (btw, we averaged 25.3mpg through the NW Coastal Range coming back from the coast), is gas blends. She does gas monitoring and accounting for a bunch of stations they own.
One of the reasons gas goes up towards the summer is the blends need to change from winter blend to summer blend. The difference is the summer blend is cleaner burning. It is also more expensive to produce. But the BTU is indeed different between the two blends. We were only talking about it because gas has started to creep up around here and they haven't officially changed blends yet.
Either way, the last post made me think of this when comparing winter / summer.

Just took a trip from LA to Las Vegas in my OS. according to my Computer i averaged about 21-22mph going about 75mph. Going up I had to refill.. coming back down i made w a lil less than a 1/4. the tirp to vegas is about 250 miles for me
I assume you mean 21-22 mpG? The computer is not accurate and you shouldn't rely on it. Just note your mileage at each fill up and divide by the number of gallons you had to put in for an accurate MPG.
Hey guys....new to forums.
Just wanted to chime in regarding MPG. I have about 1300 miles on my 2013 sport and have been getting dismal mpg as well. I haven't touched 26 mpg on the computer nor manual calculation. I typically drive about 60% highway, 40% city and have averaged 23/24 mpg during this time and am always driving with my greeen 'eco' light on.
People who are getting 26+ mpg, what are you doing differently? Is it possible that my mpg will get better as I continue to drive? A little dissapointed with my mpg, but love the car.
I recently purchased the k&n drop in, but saw earlier that it doesn't fit the 2013 sport. Can anyone confirm this or provide an alternative to air filters for the 2013?
Any advice/help is appreciated!

How fast do you drive on the highway?
One difference that Noize and I found between us is that our states have VERY different maximum speed limits. Oregon is 65 on three roads, 55 on all others. That means we average 60-70mph. His state he says he averages 80mph. That's a big difference. Keep in mind the gearing is going to have a huge impact. Evos for example love 52mph in 5th gear, anything higher and they start to go down from there. Do 70mph and you're down 2-4 mpg. Also keep in mind, it isn't
that claims these numbers, it's the EPA.
EPA Highway test
This is one of the supposed reasons that some states have lower speed limits. Not just for tickets and safety, but emissions. In the 70s, that's when a lot of the states lowered speed limits, to control emissions. Now cars are much more efficient and have raised them again. Some have remained low, such as Oregon.
So what can you do?
I don't know if it makes a difference but we run Plus instead of Regular. Also try adding a few psi in your tires to see if it makes a difference. A harder rolling surface will help. Also make sure you're running the suggested 0w20 oil. Lastly, try a drop-in filter for better breathing. The factory filters are very constrictive. I'm sure it doesn't take long for them to get clogged and the air passing through to go down. Lastly, make sure your accessories are turned off as the EPA tests.

The vehicle is driven for 10 miles over a period of 12.5 minutes with an average speed of 48 mph and a top speed of 60 mph. Both fuel economy tests are performed with the vehicle's air conditioning and other accessories turned off.

Regarding your MPGs... I'd said give yourself another 300-400 miles to see if you'll achieve higher efficiencies. My wife and I didn't see 28-30+ til we reached 1,600 miles.
One other thing to keep in mind is the condition/quality of the roads.. We're fortunate enough to have lots of highway construction... ie: newer paved roadways, overpasses, smoother expressways, etc. where we commute the most, so that helps quite a bit I'm sure.
Definitely check your tire pressures. I checked over this pass weekend and found they were all about 3 psi lower than spec-ed. (I wished I took measurements before when it was brand new, oh well.) I've pumped them up to 37psi fronts & 33 psi rears. Going to watch & see if that will give us even better MPGs by next weekend.
I'm (we're) hitting our high MPGs currently... still using the stock (paper) air filter, so I'm not that tempted to get an after-market filter (Yet)
I want to see just how efficient this CUV can get (bone stock with "simple" tweaks) before putting big $$$ into it.
Lastly, I'd suggest you try (one or two full tank of) a higher octane gas to see if your MPGs improve immediately. Yeah, it'll be expensive, but it would at least confirm if the gas you're currently using is the cause... winter blend, perhaps?
Thanks for the responses!
Yeah, I keep hoping that the more I drive, the better it will get. Yet, it isn't happening! I drove around 140 highway miles this past weekend and had WORSE gas mileage than my city driving. I guess anything really over 65 is a massive drop in mpg. I would say my rodes are probably avergae. Nothing really newly paved.
I'm going to check my tire pressure. Hoping that could be a quick fix for it! But would be shocked to see my mpg improve by 3-4 by adding 5 psi haha.
I purchased the K&N drop it, but haven't put it in yet. Recently saw on here that it doesn't fit the 2013, but haven't tried yet. Ugh!

If you have the SE 4WD, perhaps you have it set at AWD LOCK? You might want to try to set it to AWD Auto or better yet leave it in FWD (IF road conditions allow)
Here's us hitting 32+ MPG (in FWD mode) >
About 99.9% of the time it is in FWD mode. Only have had snow once this year. Used AWD about 10 minutes.
Still no better mpg...over 1400 now. I wish it was that easy

I guess I should have asked this early... Do you have 4WD/AWD model or just the FWD??

1. Peek under the hood and check your motor oil and CVT fluid, they look clean?
2. You're getting crappy fuel from your gas station. Try another station?
3. You're running on deflated tires... Check your psi, bump them up to 37, perhaps.
4. You're driving your O.Sport like Racecar on the highway, zipping to & fro. So, stop it & ease up on the gas
Those have been my conclusions as well. I'd really like to know the foot habits. I'm pretty easy on the gas. I just drive it like a normal car unless I need to pull out in traffic.
