new 2015 battery issue?

Hello,

Im 2500km into my new RVR and twice now my SUV has had a slight issue starting in the morning.

I keep it in the garage and both times I had to keep the key in the "on" position for about 2-3 seconds before the engine would turn over.

I'm going to take it to the dealership for them to take a look at it but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue.

Both times had different temperatures outside ranging from -10C to -5C so I don;t believe that to be the issue.

I've had mine for a year but got it right after the cold weather of last winter. This winter I've had that same thing happen a handful of times, one time it even took about 8seconds to start. Honestly haven't had the time or interest to take it to the dealer though, although keep us informed... I really should get mine looked at as well haha.

A few things to keep in mind:

1. Extreme Cold temperatures will drop your CCA in your batteries.
2. IF you drive only short distances < 5 miles, then you may not have given your alternator enough time to charge your battery.
3. (Just because it's a brand new vehicle) doesn't mean the vehicle hasn't sat on the lot for a month or two without being driven, so the battery may be real weak.
4. It could be a combination of all of the above.

If you know the temperatures going to get below 0°, perhaps it's best to get a solid battery charger and keep your cells topped off.

I was told it was a "normal" issue when we get variations in temperature.
The battery checked out o.k and the dealership mentioned that sometimes the fuel lines on these vehicles freeze up so to just tap the gas when it happens and everything will be fine.

I'm not sure I'm too happy about that but I'll keep an eye on things for now.

What?
Did you mention to them you have your vehicle in a garage...
(Or, are they saying we still have Holley carburetors under the hood?)

So, they're implying our modern Fuel Injection system - under High Pressure - will freeze at just -10ºC, even though gasoline has a freezing point of approx. -95ºC

Hey guys, I thought I'd add to this. Wife and I just bought a 14 OS sport last weekend, 5K miles. It stays in the garage where it's roughly 50 F.
I've noticed every time we start it it cranks a while. Longer than I would consider normal for any vehicle.
Also, when it does start, it kind of stumbles for a split second when it first fires.

There's a 5 page thread on mitsubishiforum.com about this exact thing. It was from 2011-2013. There was apparently a reflash to the ECU for the crankshaft/camshaft position. Some said this fixed their issue.

I would think that our 14's and 15's would already have this flash. Either way, I'm not happy with it. My Lancer has 118K miles and it starts quicker and smoother than the OS.

Yeah, it is annoying so I'm going to keep an eye on it until my first service.

I have never had this issue before with my other new vehicles (2 x Nissan Maxima's 1 x Outlander) so it's kinda frustrating when your new car does this sort of thing.

Mine is a 14 with the push button start and it does the same thing from time to time so it is not limited to the keyed ignition

Perhaps it's time for a battery "insulation" box mod?

It's not a battery issue. The car doesn't crank slow at all, it just cranks more than a normal vehicle would.
I truly think it's a fuel pressure issue. It's possible that the Mitsu has the ECU programmed to start cranking and start the fuel pump at exactly the same time. So if fuel pressure is up where it should be it's going to crank a little longer. There should delay the actual cranking a short amount of time or until a specified minimum fuel pressure is met.
I'm surprised people are seeing this issue on vehicles without the pushbutton start.
On a keyed vehicle when the key is in the run position, thus causing the fuel pump to run. That means the fuel pump would actually start before you get to the start position and cranking starts, thus resulting in a slightly better fuel pressure for cranking.

I've noticed the same thing on my '14 ES. Does seem worse in the winter, but it's happened up to about 50°F. I live 1.5 mi from work so I'm certain short distance driving doesn't help the cause.
