Ram Air

I was just checking things out under the hood of the new OS and it got me thinking. The intake tube that runs up to the front of the car is in a very good location. However, Mitsu put a plastic cover right in front of the opening for the intake tube.
I'm thinking of cutting a hole (the size of the intake tube inlet) so that there is a much more direct air flow path into the intake tube.
The hole would be behind the top right corner of the upper grille, so there is a good flow of air there.

Has anyone tried this yet? Please don't tell me to get a SRI or CAI because I don't want the added engine noise and the gains are so minimal it's not worth the money. I'm simply looking to squeeze an extra mpg or 2 out of it.
I custom made a ram air on my old eclipse and it actually worked pretty well. I noticed and increase in the upper RPM and speed range.
Thoughts?

I trimmed part of the plastic in front of the intake opening but not all of it..didn't want to worry about any moisture getting in during heavy rain.

Cool, did you notice any difference in power delivery or gas mileage yet?

Do you have a pic. of how much you cut?

Not sure if it made any difference but figured it couldn't hurt..I didn't take any pics..I trimmed enough to expose about half of the intake opening.

just get the R.A snorkel, you will have to trim about 1.5" off the front but it works great as a larger forced air induction over the restricted stock inlet off the air box. I also trimmed out the plastic shroud in the front so fresh air has easy access into the air box

Do you have some pics of the R.A snorkel mounted up?
