32k for mine brand new off the lot in '04 with 6 miles on the odo. That's why I still think its crazy that folks are buying 06/07 cars for anything above 20k. I don't care how good condition its in, or how low mileage it has, its a 6 year old car and its not rare enough to justify holding over 60% of its value at that age. But I know my approach to finances isn't much appreciated on this forum so....

I'm not sure why your mad that these cars hold there value so well. That should be a good thing for you if you ever decide to sell your car. If you wanted something that depreciated you should have bought a subbie.

Its not the price that I would have loved to pay for the car but it will pay off over time. I don't know if you've quoted a timing belt job lately. Personaly I'm happy that I shouldn't have to shell out 1500 or more for maintinance anytime soon.

You pay up front, or take it in the rear! That doesn't mean overpay for junk either if the quality is there so should the value.

I paid $900 for the car. Then many, many thousands of dollars in modifications.

Your approach is textbook perfect (in the bubble of a 200 level econ classroom). Its simply that your approach excludes outside factors such as supply, demand and market forces.

Why is the MK IV supra so expensive? By your logic it should be nearly worthless by now!

The VIII/IX evo is still priced above some newer, slower models on showroom floors now. It was built for a market that will not diminish (<$50K track/race/rally car), however it is priced at the bottom of the market for its current proliferation. In about 4-5 years as cars are taken out of circulation through destruction, mileage, dedicated track use or neglect the prices will drop and stabalize for the poor condition ones, while the few clean and low miles ones appreciate to fill their new market (once again, MK IV supra is an example).

There is also an economy of scale going with the Early DSMs > Later DSMs > Early Evos > Late Evos. It all scales and helps to create and maintain a ladder of increased value. Early models wont go away, and the lowest has hit a plateau so the ladder wont shrink that quickly.

Also, what you call "Not rare enough" isnt quite fare. Only about 20k evos were made, half of which are 9's but 9's of course are more desired.

I personally paid 21k @ 45k miles over 2 years ago but after buying I watched prices go up.

I am well aware of supply, demand and market forces. I am also aware that a sports sedan is not a necessity and can be bought for the right price at the right time. Unless of course its running a premium right before Race wars...

I had a lot longer rebuttal here but realized it wasn't worth it.

There were a couple of threads on the numbers of Evos sold and since Mitsubishi didn't give good break downs of the numbers sold in 06/07 the final total was never truly identifiable...I've seen 20k but then others threads would have it at closer to 30k in the US. Regardless its not like its the old homologation rules where you had 5000 worldwide...rare relative to a corolla sure. Rare relative to even its older brethren nope.

I hope that you paid 28k for one with 50k miles not the other way around. I know my statement is kinda nonsense but there are some crazy people out there.
