LOLZFWD's 2.4LR '04 WW RS BUILD

THIS CAR IS SOLD AS OF 12/13/14

I bought this car on Valentine’s day, 2012, stripped down pretty good, (no wiring, random bolts in buckets, interior was not assembled at all, trunk completely stripped, two different color taillights, faded terrible looking brembos, dirty as f$*%! A truck full of parts and an 04 ww rs on a trailer coming from a guy in Michigan, on its way to its new home in La Crosse, WI. Car was represented to be a little better than it actually was, (said it had a touch over 45k miles, actual mileage was 64,9xx, broken studs for the fuel sending unit, parts missing etc). But after a year of regretting every leaf I turned over and fixing and modding, I wrenched through it all and after its together and running (finally), I couldn't be happier. Every small issue that was run into, was fixed properly, and/or modified to suit/handle more than it would ever see.

I received a 02 Galant 4g64 block that was magnafluxed, powder coated, shot peened as well as a matching crank with the deal. Turned out the block was bored already. But, I sold an '03 eclipse rs that was water logged in a local flood to a friend and he pulled the engine and put a new one in. So I went and picked that longblock up, and disassembled it, and dropped it off at the machine shop. Step one achieved. I needed a new crank to work with as well, after buying a few used OEM ones that were represented as good and checked out by my overbearingly meticulous machinist, I ended up buying my Manley Turbo Tuff series billet 100mm crank. Received the crank in the mail, dropped off my rotating assy to my machinist, as well as a cylinder head that I got with the car to get totally disassembled and decked and checked, and it began.

-Manley Turbo Tuff series billet 100mm knife-edged, heat treated, shot peened, magnafluxed, diagonal teardrop oil ported, and nitrided crank. (Weight= 33.5lbs/ stock Evo 8 crank=38lbs) PN: 190120B
-Manley Turbo Tuff series 156mm I-beam rods (standard design, not straight beam), with ARP 625 Rod bolts (Balanced and matched by Slowboy racing/BUILT4G63) PN: 14421-4R6
-Manley Platinum series 87mm forged aluminum pistons with HD piston pin (ceramic coated piston tops by Slowboy racing/BUILT4G63) PN: 613005C-4

Stayed this way all through out the engine assembly, patiently waiting, setting up wiring, putting fuel system in, new fuel tank, suspension and drivetrain setup.

Ended up clearancing the other side of each cylinder wall as well. 4 hot tanks later....


We have a rotating shortblock!


Time to assemble the front case/ GSC race balance shaft. Bearings were turned on other side.


Disassembled head I got, sold the internals, added my own goodies



The head after I assembled it, fresh valves and a fresh deck is so nice. GSC springs and retainers were nice to deal with. And of course, new manifold studs and hardware.


When I plugged the EGR head port with a 1/8" pipe thread pipe plug. Perfect fitment.



Ready to receive its head. Mmmmm. Very much impressed with the Cosworth headgasket, really a beefy MLS.


Getting mocked up


Cleaned up and painted the stock mounts and certain brackets and hardware, to clean everything up a bit, so as everything looked brand new


I get off on sweet parts!. Ill be the first to admit it. L19's and their gorgeousness


ON and TORQUED. 100 ft/lbs, in four steps up, 50/65/85/100


Every part was either brand new. Or reconditioned to look new.


MMHMMM it looks like an engine!


Self reconditioned brackets in high temp paint, as well as the water pipe and such. DONT FORGET THOSE PAINT MARKS FOR FINAL TORQUE!


Timed. Everything lined up at zeros, without a problem. Notice this is a 4G63 belt, cam gears at 0. No problems, clearances were fine.

GSC FTMFW. I cant explain how much i like how these cams perform, I can tell already that they are going to be good for mid range/torque, and flow like a boss.

Wait....That aint right? OH NO


Getting it in there, with the trans in, by yourself, from above, wasn't the most fun few hours of my life. But I made it work by taking the front two bolts from the front engine mount crossmember off, leaving the back one in, taking the drivers side trans mount off, pulling the axles, and swinging the trans out of the way. Dropping the engine, and swinging the trans back into place.


AND its in there!


At this point I sat on a bucket, cracked a beer, and couldnt stop smiling.


Some late night plumbing and wiring, because of course, I couldn't wait til the next day.



The curiosity killed me and I had to make sure that I had a true RS LSD front diff, also wanted to make sure the little o-ring was in tact inbetween the trans and t-case for that oil passage, it wasn't. So I was glad I checked. Plus was reassuring to know what the tcase looked like inside. Good to go!


Wheels are on, axles in, tcase in, exhaust on, so close I could smell it!


First powerup!! Felt soo good, beer crack moment.


That sure is a big "TOUCH over 45k huh......" O well. At least everything is fresh..

Off to the buddies shop for start up, that way I could diagnose any problems, put it on the hoist and check for leaks right away and such. Plus an awesome buddy that hauled it on his rollback for free. (I had to give him $20 for his time


Good view of the stock evo8 tails I made into Cherry red evo7 sortakinda replicas. Red, one pass of tint, and cleared.


Wish I could get a better shot of these brembos, art. Feel bad using them and not hanging them on my wall.


Turns out crank sensor was bad. Timing belt off, in the car, kindof a bum deal but oh well. 45 min worth of work and it was back together.

^^Video of REAL FIRST STARTUP. I was so shocked after loading a new ROM with Immobilizer disabled, I hit the key with little hope, and VROOM, started right up, and idled fine. So I whipped my phone out and started recording right away, checking for leaks and topping off the antifreeze while recording. Lifters were bled before install, Idk why they were so noisy on first startup, I did prime everything well trying to crank it when I found out the crank sensor was bad. Nevertheless after a min it went away and hasn't ticked since that day.

After checking for leaks, checking the oil, checking everything else under the sun, I IMMEDIATELY went for a drive. 1" of dust on the windshield, NO power steering I found out bc the system was dry and wasnt worked through yet, headlights pointed to the sky and 2 ft infront of me, and no dash lights at all (being I didn't think that without a dimmer switch my dash lights wouldn't work.)

Ran it for a good 10 minutes, put about 13 miles on it, doing mid rpm vacuum pulls, fluctuating rpms, shifting through the gears, introducing it to a few lbs of boost right away, responded to everything quite well. Went back to the shop, parked it for the night and checked fluids once again.

Broke it in the way I was planning on driving it, Relatively hard. The afr's were good in the mid rpm range, stock rom timing, wasn't seeing any knock so I set the rev limit at 5500 and let her rip a couple times. Lots of hill climbing, then vacuum pulling all the way down the hill, varying rpms its whole life up til the 900-1000 mile mark. I first changed the oil at 50 miles, put conventional 5w-30 shell in it with OEM filter, changed it again at 250, then 750, then switched to synthetic high zinc, high moly Shaeffers 5w-30 at 1200.

Heres a video of a quick walk around at about 1000 miles. Cold starts are rough, but once it warms up to operating temp I got it to idle decent. Tune, coming SOOON!

Thank you, there will be much more pictures/details as time goes on and I have time to sit and organize it all, right now it's just a big portfolio of receipts, spec sheets, and an album of pictures

Im sure that oem uicp will be th only thing to hold up in this build. LoL.

Seriously though. Well done man. Good to see someone resuscitate a dying Evo. Specially an RS. Thing prolly wouldve been scrapped out otherwise.

Now would the rest of you guys please push this guy into putting on the bigger snail this engine is begging for!!! Hahaha its only a matter of time before you do it.

Car looks clean, great job bringing the RS back to life! I am currently in the middle of doing the same with an 06' RS!

Looks like you got some time wrapped up in her. Now get it finished with a bigger turbo. I am thinking about changing out my cams from the S2's to the R2's. Too many variables between our cars to see what they would do for me.

Updated! Thank you guys for your kind words, so far so good! Just some pics, comments, and a few videos for now. I'll add measurements and specs and things eventually as well.

Now I just can't wait to get a tune, for now just doing a pumpgas winter tune. Then come spring, I'll let that little 16g sing on E85. Plans are to eventually get something along the lines on an FP HTA green or so, using my 10.5 hotside. I'm pretty sure I could do that, whatever is the best route. Something that is just large enough to be able to flow decent all the way to redline. Goal here is to have a super broad [power band eventually. If I don't blow this 9 turbo up first. She will be pushed in the spring. I kinda wanna know how much I can make on this 9 turbo. Never know might be enough to keep it this way for a season or so.

I like white on white, with bits of contrast to make it stand out, what can I say ha. It was kinda hard to picture in my head what it would look like, but I think it turned out pretty good. I'm happy with it.
