Project: "Stormtrooper"

Hey Guys, onto my next Evo project. I got rid of my EVO 9, it was too clean to play with and MIVEC didn’t fit into my goals. Now I got a pretty strong running EVO 8 built by The Shop, named it project “Stormtrooper”.

As it sits it is a really fast spooling HTA86 built 2.3, Hitting 20 PSI in 3rd gear around 4000 rpm and making 560 WHP (dynojet). So what in my mind would make me want to change anything?

I always look to take the EVO to the next bar up. Since the closest e85 station is 45 mins, I wanted to push the limits on 93 octane. Luckily Jimmy and Kenny at The Shop in Norwalk, CT are always ready for action. This is great timing because they just got their New Mustang 500 Dyno installed and looks great!

First we will baseline it again on the Mustang Dyno, only changes will be going from the AEM EMS V1 to the Factory EVO 8 ECU and PTE 1200 cc to ID2000 injectors

Current Mod list of The Shop Built EVO 8 aka Stormtrooper:
Buschur 2.3 (from 2010, Nice work David!)
Stage 2 Head (springs upgrade and light porting)
FP4r Cams
Full Race HTA86 Turbo kit
3inch HKS exhaust with long *** resonator
ID 2000’s
Buschur Ported Intake Manifold w/ 65 mm Throttle Body
Buschur UICP with 50mm Tial BOV
Quartermaster 8 leg racing Clutch
Shep Trans and Transfer case
AEM EMS V1

Here are the First DynoJet Results:

Stormtrooper on Dynojet: baseline HTA86, 2.3, AEM

Stormtrooper results Dec 2015

Once the baseline done, I want to try 3 different pieces of hardware that I think will wake up the 2.3 nicely and push the limits of 93 octane to some high levels. I’ll keep updating the post as parts are installed and dyno tested! Then spring time when the tracks open see what real world results look like.

It's been a while, but there has been a lot of parts swapping, dyno results and now track times. All this and 93 octane was always on tap.

The 560 whp 2.3 combo got the 3 major parts upgrade:
6466 FF bump up from the HTA86
GSC s3 billet cams in place of the Fp4r
Magnus V5 from the Buschur ported Stock IM

So then back to the dyno to see what this combo could do! After some more fine tuning by Kenny @ The Shop. The car did a pretty big give and take. That 4000 rpm 20 psi spool moved closer to 5000. But gained 100 whp! Wow those parts worked like a champ!

Mod list on the 660whp Dyno Jet The Shop Built EVO 8 aka Stormtrooper:
Buschur 2.3 (from 2010, Nice work again David!)
Stage 2 Head (springs upgrade and light porting)
GSC S3 Cams
Buschur 6466 FF Turbo kit
3inch HKS exhaust with long *** resonator
ID 2000’s
Magnus Intake Manifold w/ BR 65 mm Throttle Body
The Shop UICP with 50mm Tial BOV
Quartermaster 8 leg racing Clutch
Shep Trans and Transfer case
AEM EMS V1

Now with 4.11 gears in the trans it was an awesome combo.. yes was lol. Seeing the peak power was around 7500 and slight decline going to 8k. I'm a drag racer at heart, knowing these cars can rev closer to 9k..Yep time for a 2.0.

While the 2.0 was going in.. can't leave it alone so a Fresh RRT transmission, a set of my favorite FP5r cams.

To rewind a little the 6466 2.3 went to the mustang dyno which made 600 whp exactly. That was a 10% difference from the 660whp Dynojet. So having the mustang dyno as a baseline, let's see what the difference with the 2.0 and some Fp5r's.

I figured it should make close to the same power if not less. But with a wider better power band. I was happy to be wrong.. after some pulls to iron out the boost to 30 psi and the a/f's and timing. Storm trooper laid down 30 more whp on The Shops Mustang dyno! She kept picking up power past 8500!!

The dyno is a great tuning tool, but time to see what this puppy can do! Well after some private course whoppings of 2015 modded Z06, turbo charged M3, and 800 whp hellcat. Stormtrooper is laying down the law all on 93oct pump gas and street tires. But how fast was it???.

Headed to the drag strip! Thinking it was probably way faster and needing a bunch of required safety equipment. But you don't know until you go! On its first clean pass, the score boards get shut off and the tech guy comes out and looks at the car and says "you need to go back to tech". That sounded awesome knowing it was either quicker then 11.5 and/ or faster than 135 mph. Not so great knowing it was spinning like crazy and had more ET in it. Also turned down the boost and added fuel since it was a 65 degree day and was running most of the winter in 30 degree weather lol.

The nice ticket girl gave me my pass .
