Little Red Basket Case Evo IX MR Re-Build

Picked up a Evo IX project car. The car has 37K on the odometer and I got a great deal on the car. It pretty much has everything to put it back together but I'll need a new short block and the head may need a little work. The engine is crankwalked and the bottom end is probably a total loss. It's possible that the pistons and rods are good.

Anyhow.. here we go.. here's what's in the basket..

evo01 by
Nisei FMIC 3.5". Thew my old Evo IX vanity plate on it.

evo02 by
Gave it a spongebath in the garage. No rash on the Rota 17x9 DPT Hyper Black, pretty much new Dunlop Direzza Star Specs. Maybe dried out though. GTWorx springs and Bilsteins. Normally sits lower in the front, engine is removed.

evo03 by
Little cleaning under the hood

evo04 by
More cleaning needed - LOL. TRE Built 6 speed and Shep Stage 2 Transfer Case. Also Exedy Twin Plate. It's got a Megan Cat Back, really I don't know what Down Pipe and Test Pipe is on it, probably something else.

evo05 by
FPR and gauge, upgraded fuel line. On the other side of this is a Full Blown double pumper setup. One of the first projects will be getting the old gas out of it and flushing the gas tank.

evo06 by
Wing isn't in too bad of shape, all of the red plastic parts are faded. The wing has some carbon damage but I've seen worse.

evo07 by
Cleaned all of the parts out of the trunk - Rear strut bar.

evo09 by
Recaros are a 10 out of 10!

evo10 by
Another shot of the Recaros. Ralli Art Harness.

evo11 by
Needs cleaned up but the interior is super clean. A few MR add-ons - Momo Peddles and carbon fiber ebrake handle, and MR Shifter.

evo12 by
Another shot from above... Clean

evo13 by
Not even much dust in the instrument panel. AEM Wideband, Defi Boost Gauge, at one time this car had an Aquamist Meth setup hence the empty third hole.

evo14 by
MR Gauges in stock placement, if I have time I'll swap them with the radio and put the gauges up top

evo15 by
Door panels are clean

evo16 by
Probably never used.. like new. There's a Full Blown Double Pumper setup under the seat.

evo17 by
Overall the interior is immaculate for a 10yr old car.

Crankwalked engine dissasembly

evo18
Crankwalked block, thrust washers were mangled and laying in the pan, thrust bearing also laying in oil pan.

evo19
The crank got into the block pretty bad, total loss on the block and crank.

evo20
Lots of loose metal through the block

evo21
Girdle

evo22
Wiseco Pistons and Eagle H-Beam rods (maybe salvagable)

evo23
85.5mm bore (.20 over) pistons, some carbon on top.

evo24
Eagle H-Beams

evo25
Upgraded Wrist Pins

evo26
Head with Early GSC S2's

evo27
Some damage to the cams, either metallurgy issues or possibly these were regrinds.

evo28
Pitting on the lobes

evo29
Another rough spot, if you run your finger over them they are rough

evo30
Valves look ok but it looks like some of the valves may have been replaced or they are filled with carbon. - not sure yet.

Other goodies that were in the basket

evo31
HTA Ball Bearing FP Red (Well I think this is a ball bearing model, will find out when it goes to FP for cleaning). No shaft play if it's BB, maybe a little if it's bushing.

evo33
Intake Manifold, stock

evo34
FIC Bluemax 1350's I think

evo35
Buschur Intake, MAF, Dirty Filter

evo36
Radiator and Fan, some prior damage from turbo installation.

evo38
Stock airbox and K&N drop in filter and I have the inlet pipe but not pictured, probably will keep this as it's useful for scaling injectors.

evo39
Magnesium Valve Cover, Coils, and cover

evo40
Stock IC piping with Forge Type RS Recirc BOV

evo42

evo43
Alternator

evo44
Mini Battery bracket and terminals

Exedy SD Twin Plate Clutch

IMG_0147MR. Evo IX
got the clutch out of the car to measure the discs and see if this was what caused the crankwalk like the builder of the last engine suggested. I've never removed one with the engine out of the car and it required 3 hands. Had my wife press on the clutch basket from what would have been the engine side to compress the TOB and then released it like nomral through the access hole on the bottom of the tranny while manipulating the clutch lever. The discs look worn and have some chipping on the edges.

Exedy Flywheel with some surface rust on it.

Looks pretty true

Very true indeed, I'll probably just lightly sand some of the surface rust and re-install without resurfacing.

The discs are almost in need of replacment, service limit is 3.0mm. The clutch is technically in spec, plus it's an SD pressure plate, I think crankwalk from this clutch is unlikely but I'm no expert.

If the clutch only has 0.2mm of serviceable life left, why not just replace it anyways? Doesn't seem worth keeping since you already have everything apart.

It's definitely getting rebuilt with new clutch disks before going back in the car. I was just pointing out that it's highly unlikely that this was the cause of the crankwalk'd block.

It appears to be a Saikou Michi unit (IzzyRS beat me to it).
