Oh I believe, I just didn't want to dismiss evo420's assertion out of hand. I've never heard a claim like his, so if he has examples / data ide be interested to hear it.

Its well known that at even stock power levels the sst will overheat on the track without additional cooling. If I'm understanding him correctly his claim is that even at stock power levels the clutches are slipping and that's causing the over heat. Which if true could be remedied with a clutch pack upgrade. I've not heard this take on the problem before so if true would be good to know about because if that's the case then coolers are just a Band-Aid and a clutch upgrade is more of a requirement for track duty.

what he was referring to is the TCU programmed you slip the clutches so use friction to hit the trans. The SST takes twice as long as the engine to get to operating temperatures. This has nothing to do with with what kind of disc are in the clutch basket as it’s all computer based and not mechanical so to speak. The same goes for the track conditions as people were beating on a cold trans and overall generating too much heat too fast the improper way.

Remember the Dodson sump acts as a heater first and then a regulator to keep the trans temps consistent and at the proper operating temps at all times.

That’s why you don’t see people running both because the Dodson can handle the functions on its own. When the coolers can only cool trans when it gets too warm.

I've put 120k miles on my stock SST and I've known pretty much since day 1 that you need to properly heat these things up before aggressive driving. I was under the impression that it was just inherent that they would over heat at the track without cooling upgrades. I didn't know that it was user error that was leading to that overheat at the track. Thanks for clarifying that for me guys.

I also heard that if you put the TC-SST into Super Sport mode that has the least amount of clutch slip.

I am running a mocal liquid (coolant) to liquid (SST) cooler and two additional air to sst coolers (25 row and 16 row). On track two days ago I peaked at 222F with ambient of 71F. The mocal laminova liquid cooler is compact and according to documents by either the maker or reseller (forget which) it is equivalent to a 16 row air cooler. The interface of the Dodson sump is not that large. I am having a hard time accepting that single heat transfer area is enough to solve the SST overheat problem in one shot.

Lol I don’t know how this tread has now turned into a SST thread especially when I have a SST thread lol but I appreciate the conversation.

I’ve had no desire to run an upgraded cooler on my car because of the way the sump has been functioning for me. I drive my car hard and track it and haven’t seen a slowdown message except the one or two times I’ve attempted a launch, which is just TCU based message due to the clutches being forced in an open state.

But hey everyone modifies a car differently and see different results and have different ideas or beliefs on what works and what doesn’t.

Yes the SST should be driven in SS mode if equipped as often as possible. However that doesn’t have counteract the warming of the trans the TCU will still slip it more, not as bad but still force slip when first starting out especially if the car is being pushed on cold fluid.

Well still waiting for things to get finished with the build on the car. Been ordering a few things here and there to do an overhaul and have things done at once. Hopefully the car will be wrapped up this month i've been itching to drive it. Anyways here are some pictures of the car from a shoot for a magazine that didn't make it to print.

Everything is installed in the car and it runs. Shop is doing some street driving to break the clutches in and then strap it down to the dyno.
