i also notice this but not sure if it was normal.

When the car is in neutral and I rev the engine the rpm does not come down right away but it lingers slowly down and somtimes stop at a rpm and then comes down. Not sure if it's the cams. On my honda 00 Si and othe cars the rpm comes straight down.

Sometimes when I'm driving and I put the neutral the rpm will go up instead of fall down.

Is this normal on the EVO with cams?

Thanks

If things would be the way you say the transmission some how needs to spin faster and then in turn make the engine spin faster as well. Until you disengage the clutch the engine and the axle into the transmission has the same rpm so why would disengage the clutch suddenly cause the transmission to increase its speed? What force do you mean could cause the increase in transmission speed? That would also mean that the speed of the car suddenly must increase as that is directly connected to the gearbox. Nothing “drives” the transmission except for the engine or the speed/weight of the car when decelerating with the clutch still engaged. It’s not like the transmission is its own little turbine or something that could produce torque to spin the engine or the car.

All this is as long as you don’t downshift because this would of course cause an increase in rpm when you engage the clutch again but the problems we, or at least I, experience is just in that split second when you come of the accelerator and disengage the clutch.

Could somebody else please try to explain this in a better way if I still doesn’t seam to be able to?
Good luck with rpm rise problem you are having since it Exactly same problem as mine When you do change your disc and throwout bearing please post if the problem was fixed. I have consulted with Cetfified techs and asked Al, Shiv and other tunners and they were not able to solve the problem. I even had check my TPS since the rpm rise makes more sense being a defective thortle sensor problem. I would have sold my car by now because the problem drove me nuts. Everything you said sounds correct in threory but in reality a simple change of clutch and bearing fixed my problem so go figuire. If you have the money replace your clutch and bearing and when problem goes away you will be happy like me

I wouldn't take time to post here if I didn't want to help.

Good Luck to all having this problem

No, it's a problem on at least 5 of the 100 Australian delivered 8's as well.

My car seems to do it at half throttle, mostly on the 3rd to 4th shift. Revs just drop off really slowly and you look (and sound) like an idiot who doesn't take his foot off the throttle on change or can't drive for ****.

I have almost 10,000kms on my car. I tried to replicate it for Mitsu at the first service, but of course, the car wouldn't co-operate that day.

btw, my car has had a total of one serious drag - it's not abuse related. The car was doing it within the first 1000kms of purchase.

I bet you have stock clutch and throw out bearing. No one believes me but when I changed my clutch the problem went away. It is weakest the part of the EVO and that screwed up.

Every car that has had the problem has had the stock clutch.

Mine does it...and I have the stock clutch and everything. I have a feeling its about due to be replaced. Getting somewhat of a high pitched whining noise for an instant while down shifting and letting back out on the clutch.

i read earlier that someone had this problem then got their clutch and throw out bearings replaced and the problem was cured.
can anyone else verify this?

damn, i have stock clutch but grabs damn well. i would HATE to have to buy a new clutch because of this problem. im giving it 1 week before i get a clutch job.
can anyone confirm that the clutch and throw out bearing will fix my rpm rise between shifts problem?

No, it will not.

I have had it confirmed by Mitsu Oz that the issue lies in the ecu, as it's programmed from the factory. The only way around it appears to be a reflash or replacement ecu.

Maybe someone in the US can get their service manager onto it to confirm same?

it felt like the clutch isn't dissengaging fast enough. I would think it's the slave cylinder not adjusting right according to wear and may need to adjust the master cylinder rod.

Or reflash the ecu.

I've gotten my ecu flashed and got a new clutch, but I've never had this problem before that. My friend is having the same problem and I'll go talk to someone here who's very knowledgeable monday and keep you posted.

seems like all of you who's having the same problem have a stock clutch. That could be a dead giveaway. I can't imagine the ECU reving 500 RPM for reasons unknown or just because the car's running rich. I run rich as all hell and I didn't have this problem before.

Yeah my Evo is still having the strange RPM rise as well..I hardly notice it anymore because i'm so used to it. I have done some thinking while watching everyone bash each other for offering up possibly ideas of what could be wrong. That definitely helps promote a level playing ground for everyone to brainstorm....good work. I personally think that it is a combonation of things. I do not believe it has to do with the BOV...i have a greddy type S....i adjusted it all over the place and even put the stock valve back in...same thing.

Now while everyone is bashing the people who offered their experience with what they noticed everyone failed to notice that the only 2 things that have seemed to have any correlation with this stupid problem is replacing the clutch, throwout bearing (or both), or having a reflash on their ECU.

While it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that letting off the gas and having the clutch disengage too fast...or too slow would make the engine spin faster...it does make sense that it could be a combo. This part is more of a question than it is me dictating how things are..unlike several others i've seen on here. Our cars have the highest factory boost level of any other production car in the US (perhaps the world)....Could all that compressed air going in or perhaps even already behind the throttle plate be giving some sort sort of last little boost in engine speed? The reason I say this is because in my mind it would make sense that a little bit of highly compressed air and and extremely rich condition in the engine (Which all Stock Evo's exhibit) could cause a stronger combustion than a lower boosted engine or normally aspirated engine. Perhaps why a lot of people with DynoFlashes or ECU tunes have the problem go away? I understand that the BOV is supposed to bleed that pressure off to prevent "compressor surge"....but is there a possibility that what i described about could happen?

In defense of the guys throwing out the idea that it has to deal with the stock clutch. Maybe when the throwout bearings or clutch were replaced it somehow helped mask another problem by engaging and disengaging the transmission alittle differently. I dunno....just thinking outloud because like a lot of other people would agree....this makes no sense at all. My car still is doing the exact same thing that all of you are describing. I have a feeling it may be more widespread than we think.

Another reason I think this is a combonation of things is because if it was one single thing...don't you think it would have been singled out by now? Does anyone having this problem have some sort of datalogging thing so you can see what is happening when the problem occurs?

just to update, i got a new throw out bearing and new clutch a week ago. still have the same problem.
i had turbotrix flash me and i still have the same problem.
i have a feeling it has something to do with boost because it only happens when boosting.
also, when i shift at over 6000rpm i don't get the problem.
i think im pretty close to giving up. someone please help.

hmm.. not sure if this will apply, seeing that there are like 150 posts on this topic already... but the other day, i adjusted my greddy type s bov around a bit and noticed that when it was looser, my revs went up like 400-500 rpm's per shift between gears 2-5. I tightened the top screw by a couple notches and things went back to normal.

::Edit::

the revs only went up when i shifted at lower RPMs. check your hoses or something. sorry if the info doesn't help much, but i figured this input might affect one of you guys out there.
